I not long ago had a M&P 9 that I really liked. A series of personal events (I’ll spare the details), caused me to have to sell it. I managed to get some things taken care of, and with some divine intervention, was able to not only get a new M&P 9, but a M&P 45 as well. Thought I’d post a few pics and thoughts.
First, I am still a Glock lover. Nothing different there. However, the M&P 9 is just one handgun that I can shoot really, really, well. I will still carry and use my Glocks, but the M&P will definitely see lots of carry time as well. Nothing different on the new one from the last one. Shoots great.
I was wanting a second .45 to go with my Glock 21. I always liked and shot 1911’s really well. Probably a slight tad better than anything else, inlcuding my G 21 which I can run just fine. I looked very hard at an Ed Brown 1911, and came close to getting it, but went with the M&P 45 instead. I figured that I could still get the 1911, if need be, after I decided which one I shot and liked best between the G 21 and the M&P 45.
After a brief trip to the range today, I will simply say I am very impressed with the M&P. Impressed enough, that the 1911 may no longer be in the picture. I didnt have any of my ammo with me, so I had to use what they had at the range, which is Atlanta Arms (factory reloads). I have never liked that ammo. Even with the crappy ammo though, the M&P ran just fine. Accuracy was superb, ESPECIALLY considering the ammo. The gun balances very very nicely as well, having a very even weight distribution, at least to me. In fact, it feels very much like handling a 1911. With the small backstrap on, some may be hard pressed to tell they are not actually holding a 1911. I am currently running the medium backstrap, but am going to try it with the small as well to see which I prefer the best. The trigger was a bit gritty at first, as others have noted as well, but seems to have really smoothed out a bit now that it has a few rounds through it.
My intial impressions are that this M&P 45 may start seeing a LOT of carry time with me, once I get a few more rounds through it, settle on sights, and get some holsters for it. I may also have Dan Burwell do a little minor trigger work. If you are in the market for a new .45, give the M&P 45 a look. Shoot one if you can. If you like 1911’s, I bet you’ll like the M&P.
Nice! I have both the M&P40 and the 45. As John Wayne777 stated, the trigger job makes a world of difference on the M&P’s trigger. I performed the trigger job on my 40 with great success, but ended up butchering the sear on my M&P45:( My M&P45 is at Burwells shop getting a 5.0lb trigger job along with a refinsh to the slide, barrel, and control levers with the Teflon/Nickle. Looks like you got one with a good finish on it. The finish on my 45 looked like hell right out of the box. I should have it back in the next 10days and I will post pics when it shows up.
Congrats on your new tools! At home, I used to say there must have been an “Invisible Lanyard” on it at the store…

My agency is evaluating these, but I don’t know what calibers would be approved. I’ve heard nothing but good things about them. We just got approved for P2000/P2000SK this year. Lots of the brand new guys are buying those straight out of graduation. I tell them to be patient…

I wouldnt say I have converted… more of a dual capacity. My Glocks arent going anywhere anytime soon.
All I can say is, if today’s short range session was any indication, the M&P 45 is going to fast become a favorite with me. Its going to suck in a way though, because then I’ll have to start choosing between my Glocks and the M&P’s as to which one to carry on any given day. It will be as bad as watching my wife try to figure out what pair of shoes she wants to wear.
I am not a fan of small handguns. Never liked the Glock 26 sized guns. However, this darn thing actually feels pretty good in the hand. Points just as well as a fullsize too.
