Some general AR questions

Posts/threads consolidated:

Hi,

I’ve had an M4 for a short time, couple of years… And had played with Moving the Red Dot sight on the rail but never had a chance to use a Cantilever mount. How much advantage is it over a straight mount (putting the sight over the receiver) To using a cantilever placing it extremely forward?

Is it worth trying? I have nothing else to mount on the receiver other than a BUIS (MI ERS)

Am I better off keeping the sight closer to my BUIS? I suffer from a focus problem where the red dot is a perfect dot when looking thru my iron sights (co-witnessing) but it’s blurry when looking thru the red dot alone without the irons… I don’t know if my eyes are terrible or if this is just normal. It’s a Tasco Red Dot (Burris Extreme/ Adco Clone), not a high quality optic like an AimPoint.

Stupid question perhaps but in your guys opinions how important is it personally to keep your rifle in one color scheme or the other?

I’ve found great deals but the colors of the parts would leave me with a Partridge Family looking Blaster

i.e. MI ERS (OD BUIS), F.D.Earth Trigger guard (Magpul) G27 grip (O.D.)

I have always liked camo finished ARs but thought the fellow range guys would laugh and call me a Poser?

Opinions please?

Entry stocks… I don’t know anyone with one so I haven’t been able to test one out. What purpose would they be better for than a 6 pos. collapsable stock like my Bushy?

What length would I compare it to on my 6 pos. stock? I never use the fully extended position, i mainly use the #3 or #4 Spot.

2nd question for the night,

IMO, if you can get the parts a good prices then you can paint them youself in a camo patern and make it your own. Or just be patient and find the colors that you want and put them on after you have all of them.

I have an Entry Stock on one of my weapons only because it is left over from the Ban. Once I can get a replacement I will. On a side note, it’s not a bad stock. It is comfortable though.

If you go to the range and via dress and demeanor come off as some kind of gung-ho goofball (we all know the type), the camo might not work. Just too much.

If, however, you go shooting like a relatively normal individual I would not be worried in the least. Nor would I give two shits what anyone says.

PERSONALLY, I kind of like Henry Ford’s thoughts on the Model T - you can have any color you’d like… as long as it’s black.

But that’s my AR, set up my way. My wife’s is actually darned near factory stock, and she’s pretty happy with it like that.

I have thoughts on another build, with a different purpose - magnified scope or a suppressed SBR. I might go with a different scheme there, but if I were not painting it, I’d personally insist on matching parts.

If I were painting the gun, as was mentioned, it’ll ALL change anyway, so who cares.

All this aside, if I were trying to build one, had fairly good deals on certain parts I needed, and wanted to get it in working order in short time, I’d rather have a reliable Frankengun than matching, non-functional parts.

I personally would not give a guy any serious crap about mis-matched parts. I’d rather see them out on the line, practicing and enjoying themselves.

It’s better for “Buttstroke to the(insert name of body part here)” than the collapsible stock.

I have an ACE Entry Stock and a Sully Stock on two of my ARs for Massachusetts AWB compliance. I like them both. The ACE is light but feels solid and the Sully feels really solid and is a quite a bit heavier. The Sully will help give a more neutral balance to a muzzle heavy carbine. The length of pull on both is about the same as a standard M4 carbine stock in the first position.

The purpose of the cantaleiver mount is to allow for enough room to mount something like a magnifier or an NV optic behind the red dot. As far as need, no, you don’t strictly need one if you won’t be mounting those sorts of accessories behind the red dot.

Thanks All! didn’t expect so many warm welcome/answers so quickly… Awesome!!

gemini-I don’t mean for my question to sound like I’m being an asshole if it does. So in your experience, if I pound somebody with my Magpul MOE stock, am I in danger of ruining it/ it not doing the job I intend it to do at that moment? I 100% understand your point; I went through Katrina(yes, I actually did, wife at Ochsner for her OB/GYN Residency, we never left, some great stories!) so I can see the need to pound someone in certain moments with a butt stock. Any experience with this usage of this particular stock? Had to hit several dirtbags with a CETME stock and it performed admirably so I always wondered how a MOE stock would hold up.

I have a Larue cantilever mount with an Aimpoint ML3 on one of my work guns and I like the setup. The main reason for having the cantilever mount, as stated before, is to give you space for a magnifier behind your optic. If you don’t have a need for it then it may not be necessary. I prefer the cantilever on this particular setup do to its intended uses. I also prefer the cantilever with the larger Aimpoint models. It clears my field of view.

Regarding the butt-stroke using the MOE/CTR, I have not seen any issues using it as an impact tool to gain compliance. However that is not its intended use and I would not expect it to hold up as well as a fixed stock. Using the stock to clear malfunctions and slamming it into the ground has not caused any issues, but I may have bent a RE but I’ll have to check it when I get back home.

SWATcop1911-"…impact tool to gain compliance. " I like the way you think.

Yeah, I’ve got an Ace stubby Skeleton stock on my LMT. Solid, comfortable…and better for my young son to use.

I got on kinda late on this one, but regarding your mismatched furniture, the way I look at it is if somebody’s gonna give you shit over the wrong color scheme they probably use UTG rails and talk about being able to “reach” out to 100yds. I wouldnt worry about it. Upgrade later if youd like or just keep em there. If it works it fine.
