So Ive been waffling over whether or not to get an SPR upper, and after a lot of research I decided that a Recce style upper would be a better fit. I didnt feel that the extra size and weight of a true SPR upper was worth it. I wanted a top tier upper so I was considering LaRue, Noveske, a couple custom builders, and of course BCM. BCM had the quality I was looking for at a great price and it was available when I wanted it. Itll be used for range, classes, zombies, etc. Optic will be ACOG TA31F with red chevron.
So behold my BCM BFH Recce upper
Hammer forged 16" barrel, Cr lined M4 cut with mid length gas
BCM FA BCG
BCM Gunfighter Mod 4 CH
LaRue 12" FF
Still need:
Magpul MBUS
Magpul AFG
ACS or SOPMOD?
Vortex or Blackout FH
Better than Christmas
Packed securely inside
BCM goodies
They need no introduction
Proper staking, of course
HP/MP bolt
HF HP MP 1/7 556 NATO
Standard VS Mod 4
Close up (its smooth, just greasy)
A blind man could see these T marks
Right side
Left side
As it will be
Im headed to the range today so Ill have a range report later tonight or tomorrow.
That, sir, is a very fine weapon! Thanks for the pics. I am thinking of building a Recce-ish carbine myself, and was going to use one of Paul’s uppers for the job.
Are you going to use a aftermarket trigger?
Please post some results when you get it to the range.
That’s a sweet weapon you’ve got there. I’ve always liked middies and rifle length rails. I’ve been shooting a T&E BFH BCM Middy this weekend and have been most pleased with it’s reliability. I need to get one of them soon.
Thanks for the complements guys, this thing is fuckin awesome! A few initial observations…
Ran though 240 rds of Prvi M193 and 30 rds of BH Mk 262 seconds with the quickness (see below). No problems. Ive ordered a few things from Bravo before but nothing like this. I am now officially a BCM fanboy.
Im glad I went with this setup, it balances superbly. I was worried about the rail being so long, but its not noticeable and I like the capability to put a bipod further out.
ACOGs are awesome. Due to my crappy old arms mount that shifted I never used it much but now that I have a new mount for it I am very pleased.
Got to the range with 1+hours of light left and only a couple hot periods. Also had to zero my Aimpoint and run a dozen rounds through my M1S90. That fuckin Aimpoint was a royal pain, I gave up on it after wasting almost a whole hot period  About 42 F, no wind, not crowded, perfect conditions. I wish I had went sooner so I had more time. I was using a homebuilt CMMG lower with CMMG internals and Magpul furniture plus Krylon/pine needle spray job. I need to build a dedicated lower for it pronto. The lower in my OP goes to a LWRC gun that Im selling to a friend so it was only used for the photo op.
I am going to have to start investing in heavy bullets now. I shot the 30 rds of 262 in 1 min 12 sec, and the Prvi about a mag a minute. 50 yds. Due to my self imposed time constraints I just did a quick run through to make sure it was gtg. Im going to buy a few kinds of 7X gr ammo to see what runs best. The groups suck obviously, next time Ill shoot with accuracy in mind. Thinking about a DMR trigger.
I have been looking at Aimpoints for my soon to be ready rifle, but I am also interested in ACOG’s. For the price of an Aimpoint and a magnify unit, a ACOG makes allot of sense. Give me a few experiences with your aimpoint and the ACOG to see the differences. The higher magnification makes sense to me 4X.
I see from another thread you have a similar upper to mine on the way, congrats. Im sure you will be as pleased with it as I am mine. Im on half days at work for the next month so I will have lots of time to run it through its paces.
As far as Aimpoint vs ACOG…
I have never been a fan of 1x optics + a magnifier, just personal preference. I havent taken a class with either, only irons so I cant really tell you too much on speed other than at 50 yds I can switch between targets fairly quickly using the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC) of both eyes open more or less. For sure it isnt as fast as a red dot sight, but then again it is better for precise work than a red dot. One thing you might want to check out, and something I just got interested in myself recently, is the Trijicon Tri-Power 1-4x24. More riflescope than the ACOG (which itself is kind of a fixed power red dot) it still has the tritium and fiber optics but is variable from 1-4. Reviews are quite favorable and you can get it in a LaRue mount for $875 so its a bit cheaper as well.
Thanks for the suggestions. I found that Trijicon Tri power earlier, but passed over it. I will have to give it a once over. GMZ what do you think of the Troy BUIS with the trijicon? Should I go this route or stay with the regular Troys? This would be my first experience with a red dot of any kind.
B-E-A-utiful rifle! It’s hard to live on a working mans salary with this hobby. One slow rifle build at a time. The recce is still a few away. Congrats on the EXACT upper I wanted.
