Hi. I was just wondering what is the general consensus on the SOG Trident knife. I know where I can get one for about $60 and just wanted to hear the pro’s and con’s.
I’m just a regular joe, but I’d like a knife that I can use for EDC or, God forbid, in a tactical role if need be. Thanks for any help.

I have one that I got at the same time a Benchmade 940. THe SOG sits on a book shelf.
So the SOG has an opening assist system so that you open the blade a bit and it pops open. The Benchmade Axis system is not an assist sytem, but you can just ‘flick’ the blade open, with out touching any buttons. The SOG has a safety on it, which is way small, but for pocket carry, I’d want to use it since when that knife blade moves far enough to open, IT OPENS.
Not a bad knife, I’m going to carry it in my car since it has a seatbelt cutter. Nice and sharp.
Not a bad knife, but for my EDC, the 940 with the AXIS works better for me.
I had a SOG Pentagon folder. I carried it for a few years. I now carry a Benchmade. The SOG didn’t hold an edge as well, the handle and lock did not seem as sturdy, and the pocket clip continually snagged. Since the clip was a skeletonized design it bent frequently until it finally broke.
The Benchmade is a better albeit more expensive alternative. Based on my personal experiences I wouldn’t by another SOG folder. If I was looking in that price range, I would try a CRKT or Spyderco. I’ve had good luck with Spyderco.

For that price i would get a benchmade most likley a griptilian. Better blade steel and better lockup. Be warned of the blade tips for they can break like on my mini grip. To lazy to send it in to get to replaced, but a coworker of mine broke his friends tip off his Rukus. ZTs are nice and some of the money goes to a good cause. anywho if you’re buying online try yourcornerstore.com or knifeworks.com i’ve had good experince with both.
just my .02

Thanks for all the replies. I’m the kind of guy that likes to see a product in-hand before buying, so I guess I need to start looking around more. I’m particularly intrigued by the Benchmades, though the Griptilian is closer to my price range than the 940 (though the 940 looks like a good future purchase :D).
I have a buddy that loves his Griptillian. I let him try my 940 and he now cares one too
They are both great knives, and the SOG isn’t a bad knife. Maybe there are a few people can do it, but my wife is incredulous evertime a new package comes in. “Don’t you have one already?” She rolls her eyes worse at family birthdays when I flick out the 940 from my pocket and open all the crazy plastic packaging they have nowadays.
I just like the 940 reverse tanto blade and slim grip. Just feels like a mini samurai sword in my hand.
The 940 looks like a pretty great knife, but I’m saving up for my first firearm (a Glock19) and need every penny I can scrounge. The SOG just caught my eye in a local store, but I think I’ll wait . . . maybe. ![]()
I carry a Trident daily and have no complaints with it. I paid $50 for it used, which is about what I think it’s worth.
I also have a SOG Flash II with aluminum handle - if I was going to pay $70 or more, I’d get this over a Trident. The Trident is okay, but the Flash II (the aluminum handled variety, not the plastic gripped one) is sturdier.

I just recieved my SOG Agency, seems well made and balanced but I have’nt taken it out in the field yet.

good review on trident
I have one of the Trident Tantos. Have only had it for about six months and the assisted opening mechanism is getting sluggish. Could just need a good cleaning.
The only real complaint I have with the knife is the pocket clip. You can only change sides, not tip up/down configuration. Also, the pocket clip extends higher than the butt of the knife and when pushed down into the pocket, the fabric will roll over the butt of the knife making it extremely difficult to remove. This happens most often with jeans.
While my Trident is still an EDC, it’s now carried on my non-dominate side and basically just used as a utility knife.
I carry a SOG X-ray when I need a smaller EDC knife or for a secondary knife; it’s been reliable and really holds an edge. However, when wearing jeans or whenever possible, I still prefer to carry my Benchmade Mini Rukus. I’ve carried several SOGs over the years (Flash, Pentagon), and they are not bad knives. I still have the Pentagon and the X-ray. But it seems like while SOG are good, Benchmade, Spyderco, Emerson, Zero Tolerance, Chris Reeve, etc., are better. Just depends on what you’re willing to spend. For maximum value in the sense of great knives for a reasonable price, companies like Benchmade and Spyerdco are hard to beat.
