I know it’s been done before, but I’ve marveled at these configurations for years on the discussion forums and figured it was time for me to convert one of my own SOCOM 16s to wood.
After browsing the BTF used stocks on Gunbroker selling for upwards of $90, I got an e-mail from Boyd’s. They had brand new walnut M1A stocks for only $106! Ordered the stock liner w/screws, front ferrule, and sling swivels from Fulton Armory. The existing butt-plate was an easy transplant, but the ferrule and liner were necessary because they’re molded into the fiberglass stocks. The front swivel screws included with the Fulton kit were too long and interfered with the action. So, the Dremel came out and cut them down to size. Over the weekend, I removed the screws and put in a couple of rivets. Here are some pics.
That looks real pretty. I’d check out Smith Enterprises website and replace the brake with a Vortex Flash Suppressor. They make them specifically for the SOCOM.
I’ve allways been a wood, metal, leather, canvas kinda guy. I recent yrs. I’ve switched over to polymer and Nylon for practical reasons. But, wood still is more appealing to the eye. Good job. The local gun shop has a Tanker Garand that is part of the owner’s collection. I still need to shoot that thing!
I’m an idiot and forgot to do a before and after weigh in. I will ask my buddy to bring by him stock SOCOM 16 to the shop next week so we can do a side by side. Doesn’t feel that much heavier. It’s a good kind of heavy!
