Question: Has anyone been successful in getting their employer to allow for a paid 30 minute or hour long workout? Is this just a crazy notion, or am I the one that’s crazy? I mean getting an employer to actually pay you to workout, whoa!
We all know a healthy employee calls in sick less and goes to the doctor less. Which in turn saves on healthcare. You would think that employers would be all over this if it saves money. There’s been plenty of studies. I did a google search but most data was around 10 years old. Anyone got anything more current?
We are suppose to have an hour at the beginning of each shift to do a fitness. Some company’s do it together some as individuals. You are still in service so depending on calls you probably won’t get it all in. My station never does with our high call volume, but at least the policy is in place for it. We can also change out of Class C into work out gear an hour early at night 1900 instead 2000 if we work out.
My company encourages the employees to workout via nationwide email blasts and a traveling health screening bus but doesn’t give us time nor facilities to do so. Granted I’m in commission sales so every hour I’m not working is a potential lost chance to make money. I just hit the gym before going in.
We do offer partnerships with some major gym chains for discounted rates for our employees though looking around at my co-workers I don’t think many take advantage of it.
My employer gives me a monthly $50 stripen for a gym membership. Plus my gym (Gold’s) gives me a monthly discount for working for a company that is “friendly” to them.
My daughter’s company will either reimburse gym membership or up to $500 a year in home gym equipment. My best friend’s company just put a gym in the factory a couple of months ago, they can’t workout during their shift, but are free to use it during their lunch break or anytime outside their shift.
I use my business funds to pay a gym membership since it’s cheaper and more convenient to do that than to drive 45 minutes to Eglin to use the base gym.
It seems like the trend is for more employers to encourage fitness by offering some type of incentive to offset the cost of a gym membership.
I’m sure at Corporate HQ there is a gym available, what we are begining to see in “the Field” outside of the Death Star of Corporate influence is that the guys who actually do all of the support work are aging.
Now most of these guys are packing a gut, have high BP, Diabetes and some are even on there second heart attack. Essentially the guys with all of the years of experiance are slowly killing themselves.
I’m not sure what it cost one guy in Iraq to get hospitalized, stabilized and then flown back home under observation, but dayummm.
I would certainly hope they learn that the gym membership or time to work out would be a lot cheaper than what they are not doing now.
In the end though, it is what they are doing to themselves; not what the company is or isn’t doing.
Your body is probobly the greatest example of Capitalism. You act foolish and dont bank the gym time, you don’t get (generally) as much time having fun, breathing air and dating skinny women.
Thanks for the responses. So unless you’re a hose dragger (no offense, ok maybe a little jealousy :D), or maybe enlisted, there’s not too many employers that offer to pay to workout.
I agree that everyone should take better responsibility of how we take care of ourselves. Just is always nice to have a little financial incentive to do it.
Just seems like this would be a great way to cut healthcare costs and reduce workplace stress all in one shot.
I get an 60-90 minutes of work out time, then special fitness events through out the month on top of that. But I’m also military and it’s my job to stay fit to fight as they put it.
We’re supposed to get an hour of workout time per shift, however we’re so strapped for man power it doesn’t happen (and even if it does, when the street calls…you go). I just go in 1.5hrs early and get my workout.
A certain amount of karma happened at work last week.
One of our greatest management “stress generators” at HQ’s had a Heart Attack recently.
We were betting it only took about 6 coin tosses for someone to call 911 and another 8 to 12 to get someone to use the defibrillator.
I wonder if we might be in for a policy change?
We can only Hope…
We were allowed 2 hours a week to workout for certain details. Unless I missed a workout at the gym I would normally come in a little early and condition those four days for 30 minutes. Once our new chief whose leader ship philosophy is actually on record as being that of Attila the Huns came in, he promptly axed workout time. Our department also does not have a mandatory fitness test. It’s actually scary when you think about the lack of standards or physical fitness. I sometimes think as crazy as Attila was he probably at least over trained his army so they could destroy and pillage.
Each crew member must participate in one (1) hour of physical training per shift - where time permits. *** provides adequate facilities to accommodate this requirement.
Crew personnel are encouraged to eat healthy and balanced meals during their shift to promote physical and mental wellbeing.
My entire enlistment I hated the gym. I hated working out. I hated PT. I had all the incentives (faster promotion) and accessibility (free gym, mandatory work out time) to go but never did.
Now I’m out in the real world paying for a gym membership and driving 20 minutes away to use it.
Ha! I also hated the free MWR gym but I loved running back then and now mostly bike.
The company I’ve worked at the last 16 years used to have mini gyms in the warehouses but some people must’ve gotten hurt since no location I know of has these gyms any longer. Basketball hoops were also taken away.
