The Site Comments forum has several locked threads complaining about the new ads on the site. Site staff made a snarky comment that we can’t complain if we’re not paying members. I could use adblock but that will block all the ads, gun-related as well. I find the upper block of ads to be actually useful, since I can easily visit BCM, SD, Raven, etc.
I’ve tried to figure out how to be a member and never found out how. If it’s possible it’s certainly not obvious.
If you use Chrome you can try the “Ghostery” extension, then just block Taboola. I can still see the “good” ad banner, but blocked the annoying new one.
I just went up there to the Google Custom Search box, and typed in Site Sponser. The first result in the search is the link that I gave you to the Site Sponsorship Information thread.
I asked almost 4 years ago (in the sticky in the GD forum) how to become a paying sponsor.
No one ever answered me, so I figured they don’t want my money. I just stopped complaining and accepted the rules and let the overlords do their thing now.
I tried becoming a member a few years ago as well, could never get any info. I became a life member on Tundratalk Forum almost immediately, simply because it was easy to do and they appreciated my money.
Maybe we wouldn’t need to be subjected to these idiotic and intrusive ads if they made it easy to become supporting members….
I PM’d staff in response to the post that this thread was started in response to. I asked to become a site sponsor.
I was told that my money was not wanted as a result of the headache I caused by emailing 37 site sponsors to let them know about Taboola and that members had installed add blockers, blocking their adds too.
I respect the decision to not take money from me, but know simply not wanting your money could be a very real possibility.
The whole add blocker thing which I never knew about is actually really cool and I’m happy all this led to finding out about it. It does wonders on a number of other sites I visited, like cavemancircus, that had tons and tons of these tabloid adds and always jammed up my browser, often crashing it. I now actually have a much smoother browsing experience across the internet.
Any other ways to generate revenue for the site? Self funded site. Few bucks a year per member? I’m on here daily. No other site like it. The info on M4C is hands down the best on the net. Would having a fee for members to keep the site from turning to ARF.com as it grows like crazy??. The mods do a great job here to keep it from that right now. Or a dollar per EE add. I know I have benefited from selling a lot of gear on EE. I would pay it. Not trying to turn it into Gunbroker, but something to generate revenue wouldn’t be that bad of an idea… I just sent in my 20 bucks for site sponsor. I just asked my wife if she would pay to use pinterest (or whatever its called). She uses it daily for many things. Like I use M4C. She said no right away… Then I said… “you wouldn’t pay 20 bucks to use that site for the entire year” and she then said “Heck ya”. Just a few ideas…
I’m totally with you on this, I went to go check out lightfighter.net again, and while I know they have great info and great members M4c is just a much more presentable site and much easier on the eyes. I know it’s superficial, but I guess what I’m saying is they just do a good job putting this site together and I’d love to see it stay that way.
