I have a question regarding SMOS receiver sets, now I will say I do not know much of SMOS and know that their site is down for the moment, all I know is they are very top quality sets. My question is I want to confirm that the GYF-15 is a gen 3 Noveske and not a gen 2. I am looking to buy a SMOS reciever set from a seller, he states it is “like Noveske Gen2.” The seller is reliable but is out town at the moment and only sent me one photo where it doesn’t show the fence around the mag release button so I could confirm if it is gen 2 or gen 3. Now I think he is wrong about it being like a Noveske gen 2 receiver, I know that SMOS did make Noveske receivers but I thought it was only their gen 3s. Also that Noveske gen 2s were forged and not billet unlike the gen 3s. So did SMOS make Noveske gen 2s and 3s for awhile or did they just make the gen 3s billet as I think they are and the seller is wrong about it being “like Noveske Gen2” Also did SMOS do just billet and not forged? Hope I can get some help on this, thanks for your input and time.

SMOS didn’t release their GFY until after they were no longer manufacturing for Noveske. The set in question is likely the Gen 3. Yes it is billet.
They manufacturer for many companies. No doubt they’ve worked with forged sets before. Their SMOS-marked Larue lower, SM15 set and GFY sets are all billet. I know of no other SMOS marked lowers than those three.

They did three lowers under their own name. The first was when they launched, and Larue bought their style and they made no more of them. They later released two other lowers, all three were billet. As already stated, this does not include the many many other companies they manufactured for. Some of those companies bragging about building everything in house were actually built or are being built by the Mule.
You are correct that the Noveske Gen 2 was a forged lower, and there are most certainly differences between the Gen 2 and Gen 3, though they certainly look very similar and are NOT noticeable to most people.
There was never a forged upper in the Noveske lineup aside from the “Gen 1” forged series which has been manufactured by various different companies.
SMOS did not do regular forged receivers, even though it was something I had suggested to them a few times. The only forgings they ever dealt with were the ones that came to them under the Noveske forged lower, and SMOS did the finishing / machining work.
SMOS did NOT take the Noveske forgings and make a SMOS version, therefore, it is incredibly unlikely, to an unbelievable degree that you would end up with what is stated. Much more likely is that you are looking at the lowers which came after the Noveske forgings started showing that the mold lifespan was over, and a new mold would need to be done. Instead of going with the new forging or continuing with a replication, the decision was made (after Johnny died) to switch to billet.

This really is a great lesson I find, than just a simple answer to my question. I really do appreciate all the feedback, really is some great stuff I learned. Happy to find that my thinking was right. Looks like I can finally finish my build.
