Smith & Wesson MP-15 for Sig 556 Good Trade?

If this is in the wrong forum sorry please move to correct. Right now i own a smith & wesson mp 15 and i buddy of mine loves how i have it set up and wants to trade his Sig 556 unfired all paper work and case for it. Question is should i do the trade? On my mp-15 i have Midwest ind. rail system with KAC rail covers, miad grip, ctr stock, magpul flip up rear sight with a grip pod on it, stock bcg stock upper and lower. The sig has the polymer handguards with the polymer rail senctions on the bottom and on the sides. Also comes with a grip pod and the red dot sight that comes with the sig. Can i depend my life on this rifle? The sig would be use as a home def Would you do the trade. Any all comments would be appericated. Thanks again guys Semper Fi
Pic below is the the same set up i would be getting.

I have no firsthand experience with either rifle, but based on what I’ve read on this forum I would not make that trade if I were you.

No flippen way would I make that trade…

What is the reason? i know nothing about the sig rifles

That is the cheapest and least liked SIG. It is cheap accessories on cheap crap hardware.

This is a link to a current Thread on the SIG556.

I had the SIG Classic SWAT. I wouldn’t be without an AR for a 556. If you want something to play with, it’s OK… but read the thread, no sense repeating all of that.

Your S&W goes for about $900 stripped, I’ve seen used 556’s going for about the same. I’d figure the AR would be easier to get rid of plus (to me) your AR is worth more with what you have on it than the SIG. IMO

Answer to your questions, NO! NO! NO!

.

Go to the “Other Assault Rifles” portion of this forum and read the Sig 556 threads.

To summarize… in no way would I trade the S&W for one.

I had an M&P 15, and the only reason I don’t anymore is that I needed money, and had to let it go. Very dependable, accurate and not picky about ammo. Keep the M&P.

i love my mp-15 never had any problems with it but he offered the trade and handled the sig 556 a little bit today but didnt fire it at all. It had crossed my mind that the sig would be a better rifle due to it being a Sig but i never really looked into buying one due to its price when i went to buy a new rifle. But as of right now from what im reading the trade will not happen unless things really change from what im reading in this thread.

I would stay with the M&P. Its a good rifle for the money. I have heard of too many problems with the SIG plus from what I understand it doesn’t even have a chrome lined barrel. If I am going away from the AR platform in 5.56 I would go to an AK platform such as an Arsenal SLR106FR or a used Valmet76.

Stick with the smith. Just because it’s a Sig dosent make it better crafted.

I would keep the Smith & Wesson. I think you have the better rifle with more parts options, commonality, etc.

I love my little M&P. I would never do a trade for that Sig.

Well all im reading in these threads that are posted in this post is that they are comparing it to different models that the sig have made. Is there any other reasons then some people bashing it because it doesnt compare to the a sig 551. Is there any info, any hard core proof that this weapon system is a inferior.

Its loaded with proprietary parts that are not easy to replace. It is very top heavy, with poor balance. The SIG red dot is complete junk, and the rails are plastic. The design recoils significantly more than the AR, and has horrible BUIS.

It sounds like to me you have an burning urge to trade your perfectly good AR for the SIG, and if that’s the only thing that’s going to satisfy you, then do it, and vaya con dios. But there is no logical reason to replace a combat proven design, manufactured by one of the better companies for SIG’s awkward amalgamation of an AR and 550 series. SIG of today is not the same SIG of a decade ago, with a lot of manufacturing and QC problems. A couple of years ago we had to recall our departments’ new SIG DAK’s because of out of spec trigger bars caused fail-to-fires. Smith on the other hand has seemed to moved in the opposite direction, and my agency already uses the S&W M&P-15 as our patrol rifle, and just ordered 100 more!

I have handled both rifles. The Sig is very heavy and unbalanced. I don’t think it is one bit more reliable either. If the AR goes down there are plenty of replacement parts. not so much for the Sig. They don’t feel of “quality” either to me for some reason. Very cheap feeling when holding it.

Oh and the optic is a pos. I believe it is a NCstar with a sig logo on it.

I have to agree on the QC of Sig. Our agency transitioned from Glock 19’s to Sig DAK’s, and it has been a disaster. The take down pins were snapping off on many of the issued weapons, and my qual scores dropped twenty points. I would carry my Glock 26 on a regular basis and would only use the Sig for quals. Considering I own a 226 that is stamped made in West Germany with Sig Sauer in Herdon, VA and first generation 229, I still can’t believe how far Sig quality has fallen.

That being said, I did look at the 556, but it was heavy and looked cheap, so I bought a LWRC rifle instead. I think I would rather save the grand that they are going for and either buy a SCAR, LMT .308, or ACR. Apparently if it was such a hot seller why did Sig come out with AR type rifle

Not a chance in a million years… Stick with the M&P;)

Don’t do it!!! Don’t even think about it!
