Smith & Wesson M&P 15 owners...speak up please

I’ve been reading on here for almost a week now and cant find much info on the M&P 15.
I bought one last week and have been trying to see what the popular opinion was on them.
Mine is way more accurate than I expected it to be…I’ve only put 824 rounds through it so far but it hasn’t missed a beat.

I’m new to AR’s…I owned a Colt HBAR several years ago, but didn’t keep it long…traded it for a 300 Win Mag custom with a Lilja barrel (tack driver).

I do have a few SKS’s (chinese and yugo’s)…but I got a wild hair and bought this AR while I could still get one. I’m glad I did…My son and I had a blast popping crows over the weekend, it is fun to shoot.
I’m going to see how it works on coyotes and groundhogs this year…if it does a good job I think I’ll put some deer meat on the table with it next season (its legal in Tennessee).

Didn’t mean to get so long winded…but I guess this is my introduction post…tell me how those M&P 15’s are running.

My bud’s M&P15T has run fine, including some rounds I’ve put through it.

I’m not sure of the round count.

S&W M&P 15 (base model) here, bought last July. Caveats are that it’s my first AR and that it hasn’t been run hard – it’s seen a high of 300 rounds in one session, no training classes.

That said, I’m pleased with the gun and the value it represents. If I had it to do over again, I’d go with the M&P 15A instead of the base model.

Mine is the base model too…but thats what I wanted…a fighting rifle accurate enough to hunt with, and light enough to carry all day up and down the steep hills and hollers around home. Fast handling, accurate, reliable…in no certain order was what I was looking for.

Why would you prefer the other model…what do you use it for?

EDIT: the only difference I see is the rear sight…you can change that cant you?

I ditched the carry handle in favor of a Troy BUIS and an Aimpoint Comp ML3 on an ADM #68 mount. Woulda saved myself the price of the sight by choosing the M&P 15A – but I bought the gun as a foundation piece anyway, so it was part of the price of learning and building.

The purpose of this rifle is to allow me to develop proficiency with the AR platform, with a focus on personal defense.

OK…now I get it.

I’m learning too:)

My buddy got one of the basic models, and I’ve had the opportunity to shoot it a bit. Never missed a beat. The only downside we’ve found so far is that it won’t accept Magpul Pmags without modifying the mags…basically just filing down a little bit of the ribs. As it was explained to me by a dealer at a local gunshow, S&W lowers have the magazine well corners a little more “rounded” than most other AR makers…so the mags don’t quite fit in high enough to catch. I filed one of my Pmags down a bit to see if it would fit and it seems to work fine, and the amount that is needed to be removed is hardly enough to affect the integrity of the magazine…those Pmags are rock solid!

The factory mags seem to work good too…I have 8 ordered plus 2 freebies coming from S&W (the rebate)

I have a M&P T. The only problem that I KNOW was not operator error or a magazine issue was the gas block coming loose. The gas block came from S&W with no Loctite on the set screws and no set screw dimples in the barrel. Both of which I fixed this weekend. I haven’t had it to the range yet but hopefully It’ll go more than a 100 rounds before a malfunction.

I disassembled mine and checked that all parts were staked before firing it…mine was well staked at the factory…sorry to hear you got a “Friday gun”…

Heres mine…I think this is what you’re calling a gas block…correct me if I’m wrong …

Date of manufacture: It left the factory on 11-27-07

Um, that’d be a carrier key, 'Runner. Good that you’re making sure that it’s properly staked, but the aforementioned gas block is at the other end of the tube…and your S&W M&P 15 isn’t equipped with the M&P 15T’s gas block.

(veering quickly back into my lane here  )

 Got it…gas block…front of gas tube.

I’m learning…

The M&Ps I’ve seen in the last year have been well assembled and the performance has been good. LE/Gov pricing is attractive, and they’re showing up more and more.

Some issues with PMags. Some issues with the T’s gas blocks. Both, as already documented here.

All good info anyone had any real problems with them yet … beside the gas block that would make me mad for sure

Okay, you asked!

I bought a -15T last summer. Issues it had from the git-go:

– POA/POI was 10’ off at 100y
[sent it back]
S/W replaced complete upper assembly

Then
– new problem with short stroking
[sent it back]
S/W replaced the gas block [per their repair order]

It worked for 200 or so rounds, then started short stroking, FTF, etc.
I found that one of the Allen head set-screws was missing from the gas block, the other was ready to fall out…

So, I decided to quit screwing around with S/W and…

Pulled all the crap off it, used the stripped upper and lower receivers for a home build --ground up, and now have an awesome rifle that shoots very well, is 100% reliable [knock on wood, it’s up to ~2300 rounds without a hick-up] and I learned all about building reliable AR’s in the process. I also have twice the retail price into it, so there you go.

I’m the exception I guess, as I haven’t heard of any other “horror” stories with this much incompetence by S/W. I would personally recommend a Noveske looking back at my Leonidas vs. MP-15T track records, but YMMV.

upper/lower: S/W M&P-15T
bbl: Noveske 1:7 SS w/ Vortex
LaRue 11.0
Troy BUIS
TD pistol grip and VFG
LMT SOPMOD buttstock w/GG&G rear Sling Thing
McCormick drop-in match trigger
Gas Buster CH
ACOG 31RCO-M4
LaRue 4xDOS mount

Would you happen to know the date of manufacture of that rifle…or first 2 of the serial number, just for future reference…

EDIT: sorry to hear you got a rifle that was started on Friday and finished on Monday…

I have a 15T with a ser. # 55xxx & not one problem so far. For the most part it’s a one minute gun. The only things I have done are cosmetic, being - Ace socom stock, MAID, TG BG, 552, & SF M600A. Couldn’t be happier with it for the price I paid.

s/n is 57XXX

I Picked a M&P AR"T" and got to run 250 rounds of 55 gr Prvi down it sunday and had No problems. I am going to really ring her out this weekend, I have 850 rounds of several different flavors to try in her to see what she likes best. this one will take Pmags with No problems.
