Long-time lurker on this website but this is the first time to post. Any current updates from any of you who own or have fired a Smith and Wesson VTAC - likes and/or dislikes? I’ve searched and found an earlier thread but the last post on it was on 11/09. Thinking about taking the plunge and I’m looking for more info besides manufacturer propaganda and the like. Thanks…
At the 2010 Shot show S&W/VTAC intoduced an updated version of their carbine using the new VTAC/TROY 13" BattleRail, and a 16" 1/8 twist, midlength, fluted chrome lined barrel which adds up to a really nice package. I haven’t seen them hit the shelves yet, but that would be the one to get once it becomes available.
personally…for the $$ there are better choices out there. BCM, LaRue, DD, etc…
That might be true but it really depends on what he wants/needs his rifle for. The VTAC package is a very nice package and I’ve considered buying one to go with my DD, Noveske, and LMT. I like good stuff but tend to believe the current S&W’s are good stuff. Larue is not in the same price point, BCM complete rifles are hard to find, but the DD is closer to apples to apples. I don’t disagree with your assertion but I’ve seen several 3 gunners running S&W’s and the bottom line is that they arer building a very nice rifle, listening to customer feedback and giving the shooter what they want. If I were buying today I would buy S&W before LMT and put them right with DD, of which I really like. I also prefer the new Troy rail system to the Omega X, which is sorta overkill for 99% of us.
Here, I will make it hot for you! I am waiting for these to hit the shelves any week now. That’s alot of gun for the money and will be no where near the price of $1700. My shop estimates it down in the $1200 range. I sold my 15T to get this.

i will be getting one of these myself as well for my 3 gun set up seems like a good set up should be much lighter than what im running now

The new updates to the VTAC make it a very attractive package that would serve you well.
I spoke with a S&W rep at the NPRC yesterday in the vendors section. He said possibly a July/August release date for the new Vtac M&P15 (16" 1/8 twist, Mid length gas system, Fluted barrel, Vtac “Extreme BattleRail” version).

S&W’s site says it is a 14.5" bbl with a pinned vortex. It also says it is a 1-7" twist. I am a fan of the original VTAC rifle and I am a fan of this one. Retail on it is $1770, so I bet it will be $1200-$1300 based on Smith’s retail to street price ratio on most of their rifles. Hell their retail for the 15T is $2200, and Grant sell them for about $1300.

I own a S&W VTAC with the Kyle Lamb handguard and SureFire brake. It is light and accurate. But I am going to sell and other stuff it to fund a Noveske that I really want and a pencil barrel carbine.
I am up in the air on which one I like better. I am currently waiting for the 15TS to be released (model #811024 on smith’s site). Now after watching the VTAC youtube video, I am torn.
Both great looking rifles. I just wish S&W would figure out when they are REALLY going to release the rifles. Per several calls to CS, Smith continues to either put it off a month each time or even the people that answer the phone aren’t even familiar with the rifle and are surprised after being on hold for several minutes while they “look” for it in the system. Just anxious. Wonder what the price difference would be between the VTAC and the 15TS.
I know “JFreulers” Carolina Troopers rock some M&P rifles on duty. I wonder how they have held up?

When I finish getting the rest of the ones I have at armory issued we will have 500 S&W M&P rifles on the road. Each rifle that is issued gets 600 rounds of training ammunition and it’s used over a three day class. So far they are holding up well and we are VERY pleased with them. We are satisfied with them so much we just traded some old Beretta SG’s for another order of rifles.
Just watched the video and realized that the new 2010 S&W VTAC has a fluted barrel, troy flip up battle sights, comes with a VTAC light holder, no light which is nice (I want a LED G2). Up in the air with the troy pistol grip and stock. I would probably switch that out.
Only thing missing on the video was if it came with the 2 point padded sling and handguard attachment?
