So, I am looking to buy some sort of AR-15. I am not new to them, just knew to buying them and some of the accessories. I was looking at a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 .223 package which comes with the rifle and an EoTech 512 optic and 5 free 10 round mags for $1399.99. Is this a good deal?
Also, regarding the optics… Would anyone suggest just buying the rifle and getting a different optic over the Eotech? Any information regarding this would be great.
Is this a new M&P-15 and which model? The EOTech serves a purpose, but comes with some limitations. You need to compare Aimpoint and EOTech and see what best fits your needs and budget. This site has a lot of good information on this. BTW, don’t forget that S&W has a rebate for five PMags if you purchase by December 31st.
I believe it is the standard model. I live in New York and the magazines that it comes with are 10 round. I’ve seen some of the other models come with the quad rails on the forend but this one seems to just have a standard grip. However I heard that the S&W models are very customizable more so than others.
Put my M&P through a couple carbine classes and a ton of Tactical 3 gun shoots. Put over 5k of ammo through it. Just finished another carbine class this past weekend in Sarasota. I love my M&P. In fact 5 of us had M&P’s. Good gun. And a great deal if you’ve found it for $1399. Don’t like the EOtech sell it later. But please read up. This site has a plithera of info that will help you when selecting, and inspecting your rifle at purchase.
NY is a big state, so I am not going to assume, but I am guessing that you are talking about the MP15OR that is at Gander Mnt right now aren’t you? I noticed the one with the Eotech as a batch deal the other day, same price as you mentioned.
I am happy with my MP15 OR. I wish they would have had a batch deal when I bought mine, and a deal for more magazines. I personally don’t want an Eotech, but I don’t think it’s a bad deal at all. Especially considering that some of the smaller businesses in NY that sell AR’s still have horribly inflated prices.
I’m not the most knowledgable guy on this sight by any means, but $1399 for the rifle (MSRP assuming M&P OR: $1209), Eotech 512 (suggested MSRP $439), and five mags is a good deal for a good combo. All you will need is a sling for your basic necessities and you’ll have spent less than I have for a similar setup (M&P15 MOE with an upcoming Eotech 512).
The Eotech may or may not be. If you’ll be doing important things with your RDS, or you otherwise want it to be reliable and dependable, you’d be better off with a high quality unit like an Aimpoint.
I have an M&P 15 I bought NIB three years ago. It doesn’t take MagPul magazines and the barrel is stamped DPMS. It was only $800 and for $99 they gave me a Sigma .40 pistol and came with a Troy rear flip site. It runs just fine for punching holes in paper and at metal plates.
I just assembled a DSA complete upper ($275) + Rock River complete lower ($235 at yesterday’s Houston Gun show) + Rock River Bolt Carrier Group ($135) + charging handle ($22). So for about $700 including tax, IMO I have a very nice rifle for less than the S&W wll cost.
Bravo Company has Brownell Mags for $8.99 so you can pick up a bunch of nice mags to go with it.
I also have a Rock River Predator Pursuit, Noveske Recce, and Colt 6920. I have just as much fun shooting the one I assembled as any of the others.
Yea, it is the one offered by Gander mountain that I was referring to so I guess thats the M&P15-OR… I’m not too familiar with the models of the S&W and everything. I’ve shot AR-15s but never actually bought one or dealt with them so I’m new to the terms as well.
The OR model comes with a standard hand guard with no rails, correct? In regards to switching out and customizing, where is a good place to buy stuff from? As for getting the rifle for $799, where would I accomplish this? I am just looking for a good rifle for some range shooting and possibly some other stuff but nothing too serious so I don’t know if an Aimpoint would be completely necessary for that. I’ve got lots of surplus rifles and some SKS rifles but I’m starting to move towards more modern firearms so, sorry for all the questions.
The Optics Ready M&P15 does not come with any sort of sight system so it literally is ready for optics mounting. My recommendation is that you buy some BUIS or Back Up Iron Sights that fold down and get an optic that best suits you whether it be an Eotech, Aimpoint, or some kind of hunting scope, or you can just run the iron sights.
The M&P15T is probably the one to get because it comes ready to go for optics and has Troy folding iron sights.
I saw the tactical online but wasn’t sure where to get one. That comes with the troy sights AND the rails on the hand guard? Would that be a better deal than the $ 1399 for the eotech and 15- OR
Yes the M&P15T comes with Troy Industries folding battle sights and rail hand guards. I would call around to local gun dealers and maybe any big box stores that carry AR-15s. If you get the OR model then it would be a good idea to buy back up sights in case your red dot optic fails. If nothing else you can order from,
Their website shows real time stock numbers so the number in stock you see for a certain type of firearm is how many they have in their warehouse. They deal with FFL dealers across the country so finding one shouldn’t be a problem.
Let me give you a little bit of background. The above posts are right, but not in your case. At Gander Mnt in the Hudson Valley the Gunsmith there is a 3gun guy, and he likes AR’s and accessories. So he put together the package of an MP15 OR with an Eotech for 1399.00. So YES you can get that MP15 OR with an Eotech, but most likely only there. Don’t worry about rushing to buy it, I have noticed it sell once, then get replaced, most likely he has convinced management to keep the deal. You can also buy an MP15OR there with just the flat rails ext. That I think is around 900.
The Kingston Gander also sells some accessories, but not many. For example you could purchase the $900 dollar OR there, and get a set of Troy BUIS for it, and still stay under 1399. You would walk out with a good rifle with a flat rail, railed gas block at the proper height, and something you could drop an Aimpoint onto if you wanted. They also have an Aimpoint CompM4 at the moment. Talk to the gunsmith try and run a deal, pay in cash, see if he’ll swap out the Eotech for the Aimpoint at say 50 bucks more if you pay up front.
As for the MP15T, I have seen one in the state of NY at a dealer in Hopewell Junction called Collectors Gun and Ammo. You can call them, I think there website is www.308ammo.com. I will be honest though I think these guys are kind of @ssholes, I wouldn’t buy a gun from them unless it was used and I could take it apart, and it was cheap. I only buy ammo from them.
As for a cheaper MPOR, you will have to order it into the state which means you have to find a dealer that will take the order. There is a guy Ruger in Kingston that may do it, but he seems to have a grudge against MP15, and he’s a DPMS dealer. The problem with shipping guns is that you live in an AWB state, which means you have to find a gunsmith that can alter the gun for you prior to you taking possession. Meaning you have to have the flash hider changed out with a muzzle break put on permanently, and the stock pinned. Meaning you not only have to pay the pick up fee, but also the gun smith charges and for the muzzle break. Your already over the 900 you would spend at Gander for a compliant version of the rifle. Them’s the breaks of living in NY.
Regarding accessories. Hah, good luck! If you find somewhere let us all know…
S&W sells compliant models, so if ordering just make sure you get the right one. You can usually find what you want online for ALOT less than buying locally and depending on the shipping and the FFL that it is shipped to you can save money over paying sales tax.
How did they “close the loop hole”? Which isnt a loop hole, just a fact of doing business in this day and age. Just like certain states do not collect sales tax and people drive there to buy goods to avoid tax.
