SLR 107CR's "removable muzzle attachment"

I’ve been looking over the SLR107 CR, and I’m wondering, does the muzzle attachment function as anything but a cover for the barrel? I like the weapon, but I’d rather have a real flash suppressor than something just there to look pretty.
Second question, if it’s not functional, is there anything to replace it with that is?

Yes, it is there just to look pretty for the most part…if you leave it in stock configuration. I think the rifle was meant to be SBR’ed with the proper paperwork. If you SBR it, then I think the Krink style brake should work. If you don’t SBR it, it’s just there for looks. Since there are no threads on the actual end of the muzzle, I think you’d have to either thread it or have something permanently attached. If I were you, I’d either SBR the gun if I wanted to deal with the NFA paperwork. If not, then I’d probably leave it as is.

Wonder if I could shorten the barrel and permanently attach a functional piece in it’s place? I don’t really want to go the SBR route.

The CR models are meant to be SBR’ed. As Chen mentioned the stock muzzle device is not a flash supressor nor a break. It’s there to “hide” the extra 3 and 1/2"s of barrel that keep the gun “legal”. If you cannot SBR or choose not to the only working attachment that I know is an elongated US copy of the four piece Bulgarian “beer can” booster.

That is a lot of weight to have at the end of your muzzle however.

AK USA makes a 4.5 inch Krinkov style compensator that could be pinned to get you to the minimum barrel length. SBR is a whole lot more fun though.
