I haven’t heard anything negative about 5.56 AK’s. Do you mean any or all 5.56 AK’s or just the Arsenal 106’s? I’m really thinking of plopping down money for an AR project on one of the SLR-106’s… Any further info on this would be very much appreciated.
There have been some issues with the SLR-106FR. Some of the rifles left the factory without enough feed ramp, and will experience severe failures to feed. It’s a fairly simple fix of polishing/adding a feed ramp, that the guys in Vegas will do.
Not all of them have this problem.
The reason that this even happened is that there wasn’t any overall design adhereance the way that there was when the Soviet Union set things up in the Warsaw Pact for 7.62x39mm AK’s and 5.45x39mm AK-74’s. 5.56x45mm AK’s were commercial ventures for the countries making them, and so the designs aren’t interchangeable.
Bulgaria went with a milled receiver for their 5.56mm rifles after they joined NATO and those things run like scalded monkeys. The US civillian version was the Arsenal Inc. SA-M5.
For several reasons, they discontinued production of that rifle in the US. They decided to attempt a stamped receiver version, but instead of using an AK-74 receiver design, which has a feed ramp riveted into the receiver, they went with a 7.62x39mm design and modified it.
My personal SLR-106FR has never had any issues whatsoever, and I know other guys that haven’t had any issues either.
However, in the first Vickers AK class, 50% of the guys shooting SLR-106’s had issues.
Arsenal made some corrections on the next batch and most of the issues have disapeared.
Thanks! I really am looking at buying one, but I’m also thinking of building that AK74 that I’ve always wanted. That 5.45 milsurp seems almost too good to pass up. I’m still welcoming input on that…
That’s a Blue Force Gear Vickers Tactical 2 point. You can get them set up for AK use from G&R, or do what I did and sacrifice an AK sling for the D ring and snap hook.
