SLR-106 clear mag/mag release issue

Please direct me to another site if necessary, but I acquired an Arsenal SLR-106(5.56 AK) - very nice!

Using the Bulgy black plastic 5.56 mags is no problem but with the clear mags it locks tight - as in thumb wont work to release mag, I need to whack hard with another mag as in a Spetnaz mag release technique.

Again - just on every clear mag - not on any black mag. And I have serveral of each and this is completely consistant. Definately bites the rear mag lug on the top good, and even working serveral (I should say a whole bunch)times does not seem to loosen it up - contiues to lock hard every time, requiring the affectionate “whack!”

Before I take a file or dremel out…figure I would check first.

TIA,

Brian

The clear mags are tight in the SLR-106 series magwells. Work them in and out a number of times and they will begin to loosen up.

FWIW, the technique that you described is not used by Spetnaz, unless they learned it from a Western trainer.

“FWIW, the technique that you described is not used by Spetnaz, unless they learned it from a Western trainer.” - that was my attempt at Mall Ninja humor - preping to not be on the short bus at the LAV class this coming weekend.

Sorry, tone is hard to discern on the dramanet. Are you running a 106 in the class? I’ll be running a 5.45mm AK-105 clone myself.

I would say I am 80% with an old Bulgy milled 7.62x39 - very tried and true. Love the recoil(or lack there of) of the SLR-106, but it is still new and I am not sure what other range time I can get between now and Sat to make this training rifle. Hope I can get a hall pass to go play at the range on Friday…

Either way - the 106 will be brought along as the secondary rifle.

I have a tantal and romy in 5.45 and they are VERY smooth. The Romy is definately the worst made AK I have seen, but still works. The Tantal is fun but not even going to think about the class with a cheek weld on a metal rod.

I wish I picked up a 105 when Arsenal was pushing them out, clone or no clone. Who’s receiver do you have? I imagine that is about as smooth as an AK can get! Look forwarding to checking yours out at the class!

My 105 clone is built on a relatively rare 5.45mm Hungarian FEG receiver. Your milled Bulgy should run like a champ. If ya brung your 106 you may as well shoot it and see how it holds up - you won’t hold up the class if it has any issues.

Some discovery on my part - again, mags load well, but the Bulgy polymer mags release fine and the clear plastic variety lock hard and cannot be release by “thumb action” alone.

Well, if simultaneously moving mag and mag relase fwd, comes right out.

Hope this eventually works out…

Did you work them in and out a couple of dozen times?

It’ll work out just fine, you need to sit in front of the TV and just work them in and out of the receiver while watching your favorite war movie or the Military Channel.

The smoke mags are a smidge thicker than the black mags and most mag wells on 106’s are a little tight with them at first.

I’ll have my 106FR, my vz-58, my Type 56S and my SLR-105A1. Most of my shooting will probably be with my 105A1.

More like a dozen dozen times…I hope my thumb recovers.

My epiphany came about when through random times it did just release fine. It was when I grabbed it moving forward with thumb pushing release at the same time. Next it was apparent that I have been grabbing the mag every time. It was that little “pull” pressure applied by grabbing the mag, pressure against the mag release, that would lock up the release.

IF I NEVER GRABBED THE MAG, IT WOULD RELEASE JUST FINE.

I seem to have a habit that I want to grab the mag and release it - works on every other AK I own, just not this combo on this model so far…
