Looking to build a AR with a a4 upper but I see no need in a Brass Deflector don’t mind if it has a forward assist. I want a slab side upper if I can find one I want it like the original m16 design but with a flattop. Does anyone make one?
Aero precision was talking about making one (see their forum on TOS) but it was put off indefinitely. Otherwise you could find a 9mm flattop upper, but you’d have to get the gas tube hole drilled out. A couple manufacturers make a flattop slickside with deflector, but sounds like that’s not what you’re looking for.
How do you feel about Billet? https://www.rainierarms.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=4606 Not sure if this is what you want, I just remember seeing it.
There are tons out there with the brass deflector, but otherwise here’s what I found:

Personally, if I were to go this route, I’d go with the CMT offering from Rainier Arms.
Im looking at building the vietnam m16 snipers but i just dont want to cut off a carry handle and f$*& up when drilling for the scope mounts so i thought that no one would mind if i made a retro one doing that and i just dont want to drill a hole for the gas tube and i dont want to cut a case deflector off
None of those uppers I listed require you to drill a hole for a gas tube and do not have the brass deflector on it.
But anyways, if you’re looking for Vietnam-era and before designs, I suggest you check out Nodak Spud…

Also, you may have more luck posting in the Vintage AR forum:

I know that but I’m looking for the uppers with the original look on them
OK, good luck, because I have no idea what you’re looking for at this point. The links I provided you will supply you with all the parts you need to manufacture a Vietnam-era weapon with or without a forward assist. I’m not sure you know what you’re looking for, either.
Please stop mucking up every thread with your elusive search. This isn’t the instant gratification zone. We have two places where you should be posting this. The Official Where Can I Find It thread or the Retro area.
I actually believe the OP is asking a legitimate question and a number of other people are looking for similar uppers.
What the OP is looking for is a 9mm flattop forging but milled for 5.56 parts
KAC had made some prototype SBRs with this forging.
I have also tried to get some companies to start making these uppers but this idea seems to elude people.
I will try to get a picture up tonight of what I am taking about.
The closest thing to that is the billet offering from Rainier Arms, Sun Devil, AllStar, or Edward Arms that I posted before:

If the op doesn’t want billet and wants a standard forged receiver, he’s going to have to get a 9 MM upper receiver and send it off to ADCO or something to get modified for the gas tube and possibly a cam pin relief depending on where he gets it from.
The issue here is that he doesn’t want a brass deflector. His options open up tremendously if he decides to get one with a brass deflector. Otherwise, it’s going to require some minor machining.
Yes we understand this.
The problem with billet uppers is they are too thick and thus heavier than a forging.
Someone in the industry needs to start making the uppers en mass as I posted above.
They would appeal to varmint gun guys, lightweight builds, and PDW style builds.
That Is exactly what I’m searching for! wish I didn’t have to mod a 9mm upper.
I agree with the varmint and lightweight builds but PDWs are better with a Forward Assist unless you want it for what I want it for because I would like to be able to lay it flat on either side when leaving it on a table/ or putting it under the bench seat of my truck.
That is exactly why I want these uppers.
What’s wrong with modding a 9mm upper? It’s a hole. That’s it.
Because nobody offers drilling the gas tube hole with the correct cloverleaf hole.
That is why this project is not straightforward.
Heaven forbid. I hope no one checks mine for proper hole profile. Has improper hole profile hampered your shooting?
well if everyone at the range laughing at you dosent hamper your shooting, i doubt much will.
The cloverleaf hole is a gas vent to release gas in the receiver.
