This year is the 50th anniversary of Dr. No and the release of the 23rd film in the franchise. The better half and I went and saw Skyfall in IMAX this weekend . . . anyone else see it?
I must admit I’m bit of a Bond aficionado . . .

So in the latest installment we are re-introduced to Miss Moneypenny and “Q” and we also get a new “M”. That in itself is pretty heavy for a Bond film but it didn’t stop there as we discover the identities of Bond’s parents and visit his ancestral home.
The things that pissed me off . . .
1.) They killed off Judi Dench’s “M” though I cannot think of a better way for her to retire from the franchise.
2.) They finally destroyed Bond’s iconic Aston Martin DB5.
3.) They casted Albert Finney (great actor) as Kincade the Scottish game keeper instead of Sean Connery. I would have loved to of seen Sean Connery do a cameo for the 50th Anniversary of the franchise. The scene where Kincade blows away the bad guys with the sawed off shotgun and says; “Welcome to Scotland” would have been SO much better had it come from Connery!
Thought it was better than the other two Craig movies, and Mendes really did a nice job with the film - overall, at least as good as Casino Royale, and loads better than Quantum of Solace.
The casting of Ralph Finnes was a good idea, I thought, and I really enjoyed the retro office set (down to the paintings on the wall) of the last scene.
Why, oh why do they still insist on arming him with a PPK???
Saw it but won’t comment until it’s been out for a while longer, other than, I think Craig is a great Bond but I liked the first two better.
In recognition of the latest release I started over and watched Dr. No. Funny how they make a big deal about switching him from his beloved Beretta to a Walther. I didn’t hear them spec which model either one was but I believe the Beretta was a .25 (it was in the books and a glimpse of it seems to show a .25). Bond protests the upgrade to 7.65 even though Q assures him it “has a delivery like a brick through a plate glass window”. M scorns the Beretta: “It jammed on your last mission”.
Later when there’s a close-up the damned thing is a Browning M1922, which later briefly becomes a 1911!
I dunno about you guys but I’d be a little concerned if every time I drew my pistol it was a different model!
One thing about the later movies, the guns and gunplay are MUCH better.
Better than Quantum and on par with Casino Royale. I am liking Craig as Bond…much better than Brosnan.
Yes, sad to see the DB5 get destroyed.
Bardem…as ususal…makes for a very good bad guy.
Since Brosnan used the 9mm Walther P99 in a few films…yeah…it is time that THIS Bond loses the 380 PPk and adopts the PPQ. Seeing that Craig is more like Connery and a more gritty and physical Bond, the bigger and more appropriate PPQ would be a good fit.
This was the best Bond movie I have seen in a very long time.
Another nice catch. I took “Q’s” interpretation of the painting as a “change of the old guard” so to speak as “M” was on her way out and Bond was contemplating leaving MI6.
The mug shows a letter (Q) and a number (10) which refers to the value of the letter in the game Scrabble. You can acutally purchase one of the mugs from the maker Wild & Wolf.
Silva’s henchmen used Heckler & Koch 416’s not Colt LE901-16S’s.
