SKS w/ Monte Carlo Stock and leapers scope mount

Anyone have one I could look at before I throw $80 into this old, beat-up SKS?

I’m just wanting to try something new…

I’m looking at the stuff on cheaperthandirt.com for pricing references… is there another site with more SKS options available?

Thanks

Bobby

ETA::

I would be interested in the bullpup conversion as well, if anyone honestly thinks they’re worth the money. I wouldn’t mind any first-hand experience or knowledge of either setup.

Thanks!

Leave the gun as is. Why screw up a perfectly functional rifle by throwing a crappy stock on it and using a crappy optics mount?

I agree. I’m all for optics and what not on an AR, but on a more traditional system like the SKS or AK I like to run straight irons. There’s just something appealing about their simplistic nature that, to me, is best left as is. I’m having trouble wording that the way I want to but hopefully you get the gist.

Regardless of my opinion or anyone elses, it’s your money. You can do whatever you want with your weapons. I’d try googling your question, or if you can’t find what your looking for here I’d hit up theakforum.net. They have a sub-forum dedicated to the SKS. You’ll probably have to register over there to be able to view it however Good luck…

Well, I have 2 SKS rifles, both chinese, and one is in like, pristine condition, looks brand new, and the other is pretty mangled. The stock is cracked below the gas tube, and the butt-stock portio of it is actually broken (as in missing about 1.75" of the stock’s bottom) below the cheek-weld area… so it’s in need of a stock anyways.

I just thought I’d play around with something different and maybe wind-up with a cool and unusual rifle in the meantime.

Considering its your rifle and the stock is in bad shape I would say research some aftermarket stocks for it and buy the one you like. I personally don’t have a SKS, though I like them.

I have 2 AK74’s and I like to run red dots or optics of some sort. My eyes aren’t the best and the optics really help.

I just figured that to have so many people on this forum that SOMEONE may have tried some of the aftermarket options for these guns. I figure I can throw together a really nice looking SKS with removable mags and decent optics… all for around or less than $350, so I may as well give it a shot.

So nobody has tried out the cheap Monte Carlo kits or the bull-pup conversion kits?

Thanks

Bobby

The more you deviate from the standard issue on an SKS, the worse the reliability gets.

What you’re describing would look to most of us like a crap magnet had been attached and drug through a Tapco or CTD catalog…

Synthetic stocks are fine, the aftermarket magazines are absolute crap, and the optic mounting options that I’ve seen for these are really substandard. The ejection path of the SKS doesn’t lend itself to scoping.

Bobby ,

Post your question over on Defensivecarry.com. Their is one guy over there that is respected allot that has a good collection of SKS’s and everything else, LOL. He goes by the name Pirate and has set up SKS’s like you are talking about and says his is 100% reliable. At least he can give you a opinion from been there and have that.

I would think that you should be able to set up some kind of a scout mount on the SKS that could work reliable. JMO I don’t know for sure.

Thanks rigrat, I’ll check it out…

If I go through with a new SKS configuration I’ll post a follow-up of pics and first-hand trials.

Thanks

Bobby

I wouldn’t waste any time, money or energy scoping an SKS.

The Tapco Intrafuse works great on mine.

I also agree with Templar that you should shy away from after-factory mags with the SKS. It will never be an AK. It is what it is.

If you follow the link in my signature to my blog I have 2 posts so far that recount most of the story of my struggle with a bubba’d up SKS and trying to make a reliable shooter out of it.

Scope mount and after-factory mags both went down-range and were used for targets.

Well thats why I like being in America we all are entitled to our opinions. Sounds like you ha a bad experience trying to scope and convert one to use mags. Maybe not everyone has had that experience I can’t say for myself as I’ve never fired a SKS but have scoped a Ak74. I prefer the reddots to irons or scopes, with irons as backup.

But then agian thats JMO.
