SKS Makeover (Not Tapco)

My favorite uncle sent me an old Norinco SKS that he’s had since Clinton was elected. It came to me just as he got it. It needed some love, the stock was yellow and some of the parts were painted black. I re-finished the parts that had been painted, and gave the stock to my Dad who does woodwork. I decided to “blue” the bolt carrier while I was at it for a more uniform look. It cleaned up beautifully, and turned out to be a pretty sweet shooter with no windage drift required on the front sight. It’s set at dead center.

Nice job, really like the finish on the wood.

Well done, when you hear the words “SKS” and “Makeover” one assumes a large quantity of Tapco and duckbill magazines.

Instead you’ve got a quality looking rifle there.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

Nice work!

Thanks guys, I was happy with how the stock turned out. No need to mess it up with a bunch of plastic when it’s not necessary.

Looks good.

Nicely done.

Nice job. Like how the bolt blends in

That looks nice!..What did you use? Linseed oil? Any stain?

I went through the Tapco phase, I sold it all off and refinished the wood on my Chi-com. I stripped it and did the “washcloth and iron” method to raise dents in the wood. Then I used about 10 applications of BLO with a little walnut stain mixed in, rubbed with 0000 steel wool.

Mine came out looking like yours…just a hair darker.

Yours looks great.

Thanks. Used a dark walnut stain and 5 coats of boiled linseed oil with about three days drying time between each.

This SKS is Templar approved.

Thanks Templar. I took this old girl to the range yesterday along with a trunk full of other goodies for a family fun shoot. I was plesantly surprised when it zeroed with the windage at dead center.
