Guys I need some ideas on mounting a single point sling on a USMC A4, maybe without being able to modify the weapon.
I posted this on a couple of other forums but it probably should have been asked here first.
My kid is leaving in 10 days or so for his first Iraq tour. Looks like one of his secondary duties will be running convoy security out of TQ.
He will be issued an A4 with ACOG. It has an M5 RAS rail and A2 stock.
If he runs very much security maybe he can wrangle an M4 but until then what’s the best A4 compatible single point sling and mounting method for getting in and out of vehicles yada yada. I have a Tactical Taylor that looks great but it came with just a universal loop adaptor and I can’t see how to mount with that. Plus if it’s mounted from the rear sling swivel won’t it be too long? (my kid is about 5’9" - 5’10")

Personally I think he might best be served with an adjustable 2 point like the VCAS. KevinB can give you better info on running a gun from a vehicle but getting hands on an M4 is a good first step…
Agreed to all. Doesn’t have to be a single point that’s just an idea to keep things simple. My guess is he might end up with a good two point. Lot’s of those around. Mounting anything on the A2 stock throws me off a bit though.
Another option is for him to get ahold of an adjustable stock if he has to keep an A4 but is allowed to modify his weapon. To early to tell about that yet.
My main concern is to get him a work around until he knows for sure. He is an IA so he knows very little (nothing) about what his new unit will allow.
Call the venders on the phone, Larue Tactical or Blue Force… Be very specific with what you have… i.e. a USMC issued A4 rifle with a Knights M5 RAS or what ever he is being issued… They will have all the correct mounting acessories for their slings, and they both are excellent products…
IMO a 14.5" m4a1 is too long for a single point, much less the 2x4 sized comedy of a m16a4. I only use singles for shorties & subguns.
Go with a Viking tactics adjustable, and get the skinnest one. No padding needed when wearing body armor.
And maybe a Midwest Ind. attachment point for the front rails.
Some cut up bicycle tube pieces, aka “Ranger rubber bands” one one the front handguard & one on the buttstock, will allow one to band up the sling nice & tight to the wep when in vehicles, garrison, chow hall, etc.
I have a padded Viking tactics adjustable on one of my carbines and really like it. I also have a Mid West Ind rail attach point. That’s probably the rig I’ll suggest to him.
I’m still not sure how to mount the rear attachment. When using a 2 point on an A4 would it go near the rear “sling swivel” or near the rear of the receiver where it meets the butt stock like with the single point. The Tango Down mount looks like the way to go for the receiver/buttstock location, but what about for the rear sling swivel location?
This is PR16 on an A1 stock mounted just behind the receiver. You can mount a 2 point to the socket or there’s also a non QD adapter that allows you to mount it near the buttplate.
A single point is only a viable solution to small guns, M4A1 and up do far better with good 2-Point slings. I am a recent convert to the VTAC, it is a good piece of gear.
Looks like he will be running a 2 point GS-2P by Gear Sector with a Rail QC and a PR16. The GS-2P can double as a single point if he wants to run it that way for some reason.
But it will require a large screwdriver to remove the A2 buttstock (body) and slide the loop on and reinstall the stock using the shorter spacer and ring.
to put any decent sling on an A4 you will need a buttstock strap. My personal preference is the strap from the Specter slings. They aren’t too hard to find. If your son is in the USMC he should be issued a three point sling (they suck, of course), he should be able to disassemble his sling and integrate the new two-point fairly easily.
