In reading another thread here, I started thinking about BUIS setups and what matters for my purposes.
I’ve always used and been satisfied with the Troy, but I have come to two conclusions about BUIS setups and my use of them:
There is virtually zero chance that will ever need to use a BUIS at all, let alone the small aperture. Chances are I will just use the Aimpoint as a large ghost ring, or use the large aperture that is there by default in a worst case scenario.
I have never seen a small/large A2-type aperture setup that is truly “same plane” and does not show some appreciable shift in POI in terms of elevation, windage, or both. My Troys are not same plane, the Ashley “same plane” replacement pieces I’ve tried before are not same plane - nothing seems to be.
I am probably going to look for something different with a single large aperture on my next gun. There seem to be some good fixed options but I would prefer a folding setup to keep it out of my field of view. Any suggestions?
I know it is a love hate thing with allot of there stuff, but I am a big fan of the GG&G Mad sight. You can get them with tritium inserts, and a locking button. I personally prefer the non locking one. IMHO it is the quickest to deploy, and the aperture selection is fast and easy. http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=198&parents=38,40
I guess they dont make the non locking one any more, but no biggy.
Troy sights ARE same plan. Unless you got one of the first 50 (which was YEARS ago, Sept or before 04ish) of the duel apertures. I know, I helped design them while I worked there.
Another comment, and not to be directed towards the OP.
Why do people not shoot Iron Sights on rifles… I’m sick of hearing, Well, ill never use them. If you are not training with them every time you shoot, then you are doing nothing less then wasting ammo!
“Well, my Aimpoint or EOTech will run and run, and ill never use them…”
THEN WHY BUY BUIS !
Everything goes back to the basic fundamentals and principles of shooting ! If you can’t shoot iron sights, don’t talk about your SHTF gun or whatever… You can stay on your range with your paper targets that don’t fire back.
On my work carbine I use a 4x TAO1 ACOG in the factory mount and the Troy folding sight… I use the irons at social diatances ie < 30 Yards +/- , and the ACOG beyond that… As with SinnFéinM1911, I am also very well served by my iron sights…
On a side note, the ACOG factory thumb screw mount returns to zero every time, and I put it on and take it off a lot…
My experience with a small sample of them has been that there is a difference between the two apertures. Not a huge one, and part of it could be a difference in my alignment between the two apertures, but it has been noticeable when zeroing and checking between the two apertures at a given range.
Also - I’ll ask since you were involved in designing them - is there a change in windage when you flip the aperture given that it’s mounted on a screw, and if so, how much?
I agree 100% on your second point and do shoot irons regularly - hence my concern about a quality setup that fits my needs.
The Apertures are offset on the thread to have the same plan. The center line of each hole is compensated in the machining, which in turn makes it same plane.
