A couple quick “teaser pics” to show off SIG’s new piston powered .308 rifle. We got a chance to look at these at SHOT and I’ve now gotten a test sample for T&E. The gun really looks to be nicely assembled with chrome lined bore, crisp trigger and staked receiver extension nut.
I hope to have some more thoughts on the rifle posted within the next couple of days with a decent range report to follow after the weekend.
I have owned two SIG rifles, and I’m finding it very hard to get excited about this. The two rifles I owned were not anywhere near what I would call quality.
Im interested to see how it shoot, dont know if id own one though. I do really like sigs 516/m400 lowers, is the 716 set up the same way? I cant quite tell from the pics on my 2 x 3 cellphone screen.
I can’t talk to the quality of SIG’s rifles as I’ve never owned or shot any. It does look like they are putting some thought into this offering but my main question is what are the short comings to a piston AR10 type rifle? Is carrier tilt still a problem? Are there specific advantages to it?
I’ll stick with my M1A’s and FALs when it comes to pistons.
Awaiting range report. I wish I still lived in New Mexico.
I won’t speak to the quality of SIGs but I will speak to the customer service. I bought a dud P250, sent it back and they did not fix it. It took months and a lot of aggravation to get them to replace it. A dishonorable mention goes to Gun Gallery in Jacksonville Florida who despite bragging about a lifetime warranty on every gun they sell were no help at all. A pox on both of them.
I think I’d be embarrassed coming, this late in the game with something showing so little imagination. This is not a gripe against SIG alone. Ruger comes to mind. Who has come out with something with an actual new feature recently? Colt for one, the SP901. If an ancient company can have new ideas presumably a young company can.
OK, I am an early adopter. My very, very early 556 was and is flawless, my SBR 556 is flawless and I’m hoping that my 716 is that way also. (Don’t ask me about my early Kimber Solo…I think I got one made late Friday afternoon.)
I have not shot it yet, I’ll go to the indoor range next week for a 25 yard zero and the outdoor range later. (See later in this post, I ended up shooting it the day after I posted this on SIG forum) I have, however, cleaned it and taken pictures.
This is what came with it (the case is just a SIG case so I didn’t take a picture of it):

Shots of the bolt and carrier from different angles compared with a Colt (I believe) AR15 bolt and the piston:
I am not an expert on anything, especially AR piston rifles, but it appears at first blush to be well put together and robust. It was interesting to me that the 716 bolt has what appears to me to be lightening cuts and the “carrier key” is part of the carrier group and not a separate piece. Since this is my first .308/7.62 AR rifle I can’t compare it to any other bolt for that caliber.
This is the second post. I am not a high speed, low drag guy and I don’t shoot rifles all that much so be prepared to be unimpressed…
I went to the indoor range to see if I could get it on paper. I will go to the outdoor range later for longer range shots. I was using the mag as a monopod. I am not the world’s greatest shot. This is the first shot at 25 yards.
I was happy enough with the first shot that I did not move the sight, just left it where it was. I’ll actually zero it at longer range. These are the next 6 rounds.
Fifteen round rapid fire:
Forgot to add, I was shooting Aussie military surplus.
I am very happy with the results! The rifle feels solid and is more accurate than I am. As I have said, I’ve been very lucky with my SIG rifles. I hope they all are as good as this one.
