I’m looking for something that will support an AR or AK high enough off the bench (or ground) that I don’t have to use 20 round mags. I would like a front and rear rest/bag.
I don’t think something like this will work, will it?
I’m thinking I’d be better off with something like this and this, but I also found this which looks like it might work.
What are you using, what would you change about it, and what would you recomend?
I think I’d go with the bags. I have a rest similar to the first one in your post, and it works well, but as you mentioned I can’t use a 30rd mag in it. Now, I typically don’t shoot of off it other than for initial sight-it and that doesn’t typically take 30 rnds, so it’s not really an issue. I have a 10rnd mag I use just for that.
I find the monopod mag technique to be only slightly better than off hand shooting. It’ll give you some increase in stability, but it’s much worse than a good piece of artificial support… like a pack.
Be careful about that Cabelas linked rest shown above. Read the reviews first. Apparently the first guy in the review list couldn’t even get his stock to fit in the rest. Of course, it doesn’t say what kind of stock he was using.
Anyhow, it seems that all those different types of rifle rests, with UMPTEEN different adjustments, and knobs, levers, etc always require more adjusting every time I attempt to use one. Different target heights, different shooting tables, etc, etc. It just seems you are always adjusting one.
To this day, I have always wanted to find a SIMPLE rifle rest, geared towards an AR w/ 30rd mag.
However, the best solution I’ve found to date is to have a nice pack or two on hand (backpack), and just as importantly, the tallest sandbags you can find. (or a couple extras).
In my truck, I just keep a few sandbags of various designs, along with my ISHOT or EAGLE discreet padded cases, as well my range bag/or a backpack, and I am usually GTG.
Still though, it would be nice to find something VERY SIMPLE in design, that was made for this purpose.
It just isn’t fun at all, to use a complicated rifle rest that has umpteen knobs and height adjustments that constantly have to fiddled with…
I bought 2 for zeroing from the bench and they are simple enough that you can throw them in your gear for shooting over hard support. Stack one on top of a pack/ammo can/what ever you have available and go to town.
i know this is a old post i am bumping but i was curious what rob decided on, i was thinking of picking up one of these, http://www.redmantactical.com/pillow.htm
