Sig P226 9mm - Extreme or Combat? Update: Decision made

I’m looking to pick up another P226 and was considering these two models. Extreme has Hogue G10 grips and SRT trigger. Combat has tan frame (anodized I think) chrome-lined barrel, phosphate internals, and 1913 railed frame. I like the Combat but I’m wondering if I’d be better off with the SRT trigger. I’m also not sure if I want the 1913 railed frame, as it might limit holster selection. Combat will be about $100 cheaper as well. Also considering other models, mainly the MK25. Appreciate any input.

I like the coated internals but I’ve never had a problem with the standard ones. Practically speaking you would get more benefit from the srt trigger. I would take a hard look at the sao p226. All the advantages of a sig without a double action trigger pull. The sao trigger has a short reset and crisp pull.

The rail does make it a little harder but there are several manufacturers that make holsters for railed sigs. I know blade tech, raven, and now safariland do.

MK25.

Agreed. This is the only new production SIG I would even consider purchasing.

I would avoid the SRT system in calibers other than 9mm. My department had nothing but problems with .40 SRT 226 pistols. I put the kit in an older 228. It runs fine

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the Combat essentially a Mk25 with the short reach trigger and tan frame?

I bought a Sig226 with the SRT already installed. I think it’s the best upgrade you can get for a 226. If you get the non-SRT model, plan on spending the money to get the SRT and install it. I think for the money it’s well worth it.

They are virtually identical, I believe. The MK25 has the coated internals and I can’t remember if the Combat does or not. I have a 226 Combat with about 4500 rounds through and it’s a very nice handgun.

Which SRT trigger are we talking about? The Short Reach Trigger, or Short Reset Trigger? We’ve got ssome guys that have been running short reset triggers in P220’s on duty for at least 8 years without issue.

And back to the topic my vote is for Elite or Tacops.

There is a short trigger and a srt (short reset trigger).

Why those two?

Screw it I say both!
Actually it’s not a Combat, it a MK25 Desert. Regardless you can’t buy just one!

I’m a fan of the beaver tail grip and front strap checkering that they both have. I think the elite’s e2 grips are probably one of my favorites on any gun. The tacops comes with 4 20 round mags and fiber optic sights.

I’d try to find a LEO hand in for 400 bucks.

That gun is waaay overpriced and I’ve had catastrophic failures with the SRT in the P220 and P229, which is why I don’t run Sigs anymore except my old 9 mil LEO P226.

What was the nature of the failures? I have a P229 with this trigger and this concerns me.

Both grenaded their trigger bar/reset spring within 1000 rounds of install.

Sig did the SRT on the P220 and I did the P229.

I sent both guns in for autopsies when I had this happen and just got a fix but no explanation as to what happened.

Thanks for the replies. Still trying to decide. I’m leaning toward the Combat, but I kinda wish it had the short reset trigger. It does appear to have the short reach trigger, but I’m not sure if that is a good thing since I have large-ish hands. Seems like all the SRT models come with the shorter trigger as well. It will probably fit me fine but I’m pretty used to the standard trigger. If the SRT is trouble-prone maybe I’d be better off to skip it anyway. I had never heard of any failures before.

Almost positive that all current LEO order guns that Sig sells come standard with the short reset trigger. That’s what the rep told me anyway. Of course there will be failures, but there’s a lot of agencies running Sigs and I haven’t heard of any local agencies having problems.

The current LE guns come with the short reset trigger. My department just traded in our 6 month old 226 (.40) and 220 pistols for Glocks.

We used SIGs for about 20 years. I carried a 220 for about 15 years. I have been through the armorer class 3 times. Im not claiming expert status, but Im familiar with these guns. We had more problems with the new batch of SRT equipped pistols in 6 months than we had in the previous 2 decades.

I would only consider buying a new production SIG if it had the old (non mim) internals. Although my sample of 1 SRT equipped 228 runs fine, I would stay away from that system.

Dammit, now I’m back to looking at black MK25. Kind of a basic pistol compared to some of the other models, but that might not be a bad thing.

Close enough. How do they compare? Do you prefer one over the other?
