Sig Mosquito

Anyone have any experience with them? Thinking about getting one for a plinker.

Go to the Sig Forum and search around. You’ll find all you want about the Mosquito.

Heads up, though: the owner of the site, “Parabellum” makes Hitler look like Mary Poppins. It’s “his home” and he isn’t afraid to tell you so. (yea, I’ve been banned over there).

In a nutshell, the earlier Mosquitos were generally crap, but the later ones seem to be much better. I had both; still have the newer one, and its a blast to shoot. Even got a AAC Pilot suppressor for it.

They can be ammo finickly, though. CCI Mini-Mags work well, but they’re kind of pricy, for a .22. I’ve found that the Champion 550-rd Valu-Packs at WalMart ($13.95/550) work as well as the Mini-Mags - - a pleasant surprise.

I bought one in 2005 when they first came out. It took some time to figure out what ammo it liked but when that quest was over it’s been great. Mine likes CCI MiniMags and the Remington “golden bullet” HPs that come in 550rd. bulk. I enjoy shooting it as I have other Sigs and the manual of arms is similar. The trigger feels like a turd in DA, but SA ain’t bad. If you already have a 226 I’d look into Sig’s new conversion kit.

Junk…if you want a good .22LR auto pistol buy a Ruger or a Browning.

I borrowed my friends mosquito this past weekend and i was unimpressed for one reason alone.

He hadnt cleaned the darned thing in god knows how long. There was so much built up gunk on the pistol that it was stovepiping every other round. I dont think this kind of pistol can take as much abuse as say a 9mm sig or any other modern auto pistol.

His slide stop didnt work either. Im not sure if it was mag related or if the slide/slide catch had worn out but im willing to bet it was magazine related since the mag was so gunked up it was sticking while loading.

Long story short, its a neat little pistol but try and clean it at least every 1500-2000 rounds or so lol.

I can only imagine how long its been since my buddy cleaned his.

I really wanted to like the one I got to shoot, but I was unimpressed. This one failed to eject 50%+. I have since been told they’re very ammo sensitive, not something i’m looking for in a plinker.

I would stick to Rugers too.

Arent all .22 autos sensitive to ammo?

As already reported, the earliest Mosquitos were problematic. A major federal agency looked at them as a possible training aid. I brought them four guns to keep for long-term T&E. They took the first one out of the box, looked at it, fired 20 rounds through it on the range, and handed all four boxes back to me.

My understanding is that the newer guns run much better but still have an abominable DA trigger.

gotM4 definitely has the right idea … if you want a .22, get a real .22 like the Ruger or Browning.

As for Mike “parabellum” Packwood, you’re on your own. I was banned, too.

Thanks guys. I know well the Ruger MkII and like them alot. Just wondering about the skeeter for a cheap plinker. I’ll stick with the Ruger then. Thanks again.

My Buckmark eats every single kind of .22lr ammo I’ve tried. And what’s more, it’s done it for 5000+rounds issue free(other than the occasional failure to fire with bulk pack stuff. I don’t think my experience is unique or even exceptional. I don’t like having to keep hand tools in my pocket to tighten the sight base every couple hundred rounds…I’m considering locktite and a looser cleaning schedule.

I’ve shot both the SIG and Walther .22 pistols but my favorite by far is my CZ75 Kadet. Reliable and the same size/weight as their 9mm/.40 brethren.

GRB

We had Bruce Gray from Gray Guns Inc. fly out and put on a class at our local club last April (there’s another one coming up on May 1, 2, 3, 2009-Carbine & Pistol, e-mail me if interested- Deerfield, MA) and a father/son were taking the class together. I believe the son was 14, and he was shooting a Mosquito. Actually, he was shooting two of them. A Sig engineer was there, too, just visiting, and every time the Mosquito he was shooting would malfunction, he would hand it off to the engineer and use the other one, that the engineer just got done screwing with.

So, if you want a Mosquito, make sure it comes with the optional engineer support system in case you actually want it to work when you go to the range.

He was only using CCI MiniMags, too.

On my Ruger MKIII, I find cleaning every 2000+/- rounds helps, but still isn’t necessary. A little drop of lube on the bolt, and it’s good for another Wal Mart Federal 550 round bulk pack with no malfunctions at all.

if you like SIGs might be worth holding out for the P226 .22LR conversion

i’m hopeful about it. anyone know when if there’s a release date for it?

Word…

The P226 kit is already out. You can probably even find them on gunbroker.
