I have been wanting a 308 cal rifle for a long time but am finally in a financial position to get one. Last night at academy sports I saw a sig 716 patrol and the gun seems to be well made but a little heavy. I would like to hear from a few of you who have fired and own this rifle. Is it a decent buy at around 1700 bucks or should I be looking at something else.This gun will be used for deer hunting and informal target shooting. Thanks for any input.
When you say “a little heavy,” what do you mean? All semi .308s are heavy compared to their AR15 counterparts.
I saw a 716 at one of my local shops, didn’t handle it though as I’m already working on another .308 build based on a stripped lower. I did a little reading though, and I can’t find anything overly negative about them. There seems to be some problems with extraction with a few people.
If you buy it for $1700 bucks and don’t like it for what ever reason, you will likely only be able to sell it back for around $1200. Sig Sauer pistols and rifles have had VERY questionable quality and engineering standards for almost the last decade. If you are going to pay that kind of money for something, you’d better be very sure that it is a wise investment. Most on this forum would say that purchasing anything made by Sig these days is a questionable decision at best.
For deer hunting and informal target shooting? Why pay an additional $1000 for a semi auto that is less accurate, double the weight, and tends to beat the hell out of brass?
Just get the Colt 901 for a hundred bucks more. You can also put a 5.56 upper on the Colt, if you desire.
Although I have not shot it yet, my Sig 716 Patrol looks well built and I have not seen ANY negative USER reviews of it. I got mine for $1700 delivered. And there was no place I could find that had the 901 for $1800 sorry, don’t know where you are seeing that. Cheapest I found was $2099.
901 seems to be a little heavier and has a HUGE magwell.

My 716 has been reliable after a breakin period. It had several malfunctions on the first outing, the rifle fail to strip a new round out of the mag on several occasions. After a thorough cleaning, the rifle has been fine for a 100 rds. It is accurate and the recoil is quite managable. BUISs are dismal copies of Troy BUIS. I will swap them out at some point in the future.
First 20 rounds (PPU 147gr FMJ) were flawless. Still getting mine zero’d having issue with my Nikon M308 scope

If it did I wouldn’t be able to afford it now, for sure.
I was tracking it with distributors for 6 months, then gave up.
