SIG 556's tolerance to chopping the barrel?

Next project… I’ve a SIG 556 that I would like to shorten the barrel on (for all the usual reasons). Presently, it is the 16 inch standard and it functions great with anything at all (.223 pressure Wolff, etc.) run through it. How tolerant is this design to shortening the barrel? I probably will only chop it to 14.5" plus a flash hider to get to 16" OAL but SBR’ing the rifle is not totally out of the question. Any personal experiences with such a project out there?

I dont think a lot of people go this route, most guys looking for Sig SBR’s usually buy the pistol version and add the lower receiver with stock. I’m sure someone has tried it though.

That would certainly be easier. However, I’ve already had this rifle for quite some time. So, I’m starting with what I’ve got. The most likely project is just to go down to 14.5" anyway. So… anybody here done this?

Of course you are free to do whatever you like, but I cant see the effort really being worth the return…

I mean the barrel is 16 inches as is, right? Cutting off 2 inches, then adding a FH isnt going to shrink down the gun much at all size wise.

It would probably be pretty slick looking (551 style) but might not be worth the cost and potential risk of gas system issues.

People on the sig556 forum have done it with no ill effects.

Thanks for the link Armakraut. I should have figured a brand specific forum existed and checked for it first. But the quality of discussion here if usually so good, why go anywhere else?
