Sig 556 rifles

At another forum I moderate on, a well known guy is saying the Sig 556 is jsut about assault rifle perfection and worth the price increase over say a Charles Daly AR15.

How does the rifle actually run in high round count classes and as issued en masse (if it is)?

My Department range staff has been testing some Sig 556 carbines and has pretty much been beating the hell out of them…without cleaning. So far, they have ran great. The only complaint I’ve heard is the trigger is a tad heavy.

I have some 556’s. And have put around 500 rds. in one with no issues. This is off topic but my main complaint is the weight. Make sure you hold one before buying.

Any ideas of overall round count, or max single day round count?

I love my Sig 556, my only beef is that it’s heavy ( compared to my DI S&W). It chews through everything I feed it and is easily a MOA gun. I’ve got it set up with a 1-4x Optic and Bi-Pod. It would make a great rifle to run suppressed as is my plan.

Ben

It’s a SIG 55X Barreled Action that takes M4 mags.

It’s up to yo to decide whether it’s worth double what a Charles Daly costs.

I am attempting to resist the urge to buy a 556. Right now it’s a stalemate.

I want to see someone run one in a multi-day high tempo class (ie 1000+ rounds in 2 days with minimal weapon’s maintenance).

Don’t do it. A guy I know has one. I did a write up on it a while back. It really falls short of a good old AR carbean in too many areas… maybe all areas. But I suppose some of what I think sucks about the gun is subjective.

In dry fire manipulations with my P556 I find the mag release a LONG way away from my finger, one of the key ergos to speedy reloads on an M4 is that you don’t usually need to shift your grip to eject the mag.

Once the paperwork comes back, I’ll have a better idea of how it runs in an SBR configuration.

I’m also looking forward to getting the updated KZ handle to get the charging handle away from the Aimpoint mount.

It’s my intention to use this at the next carbine class I attend.

It’s a product-improved AKM, chambered in 5.56 in my opinion. Better sights and minor ergonomic improvements.

I must admit, this is a cool looking rifle.

I was thinking of the Pistol version and SBRing it since I don’t think we are going to get the KAC PDW soon. Have to stop in a gun store and fondle one.

Although a decent assault rifle, the SIG55X series is not better than an AR15.

It has poorer ergonomics and is heavier.

A SIG556 is not build up to the quality of the rest of the SIG55X line.

The SIG55X series is not an “product improved AK”. It is nothing like an AK other than it is long stroke.

Anyone have a good tutorial on the 55x series, along with details of the 556?

I’ve spent way too much time on Sigforum and sigarms556 the last two days, but I’m not getting a coherent picture, especially of the sbr process. Or should I say the optimal SBR process.

Understanding push pins, screw pins, classic lowers, fish gills, and all of the sight options are just out of my reach in the ether.

I installed the extended mag release button from the KAC ambi mag release assembly on my 556 Classic. It works great and allows you to not need to change your grip in order to engage the mag release.

I was interested in one until it came out as a TAPCO f*cked abortion of a wannabe AR, but I started playing w/ one and really liked it but the prices here on them are ridiculous IIRC.

Their newer model, the SIG 556 ‘Classic’ is really calling my name though

In what way? Which parts?

The tapco folding stock model aside, please explain.

Pics, or it didn’t happen.

Come on, all your other pics got me off the fence with the P556 and SBR I am doing.

No proofing or QC.

That tab thingy in the bolt is MIM on the 556 and made from bar stock on the Swiss guns.

The whole moving parts assembly is questionable manufacture IMHO.

No trademark paint over park.

Lousy open sights.

Stock (the classic one) is made from a cheaper plastic than the Swiss one.

The 556 receiver will not accept a Swiss barrel because the threads are different.

The rail on the receiver is not the same.

The 556 is a borderline wannabe/bubba gun that is geared to the lowest common denominator that has to have cheap AR15 shit on their gun. The classic model is better but is still not up to the standards it should be.
