Well after reading a lot of bitching and complaining on SIG Forums I was nervous as hell about firing my new SIG also about the serious investment total including Holster, belt, mag carrier and 2 extra mags of almost $1200.
Apparently if this gun is faulty I’m glad I never fired any of the good old W German models. 500 rounds so far to include all of my old leftovers from my XD .40 Tac and Kahr K40. These included WWB 165 grain 300 rounds 0 issues, 180 grain Magtech HP’s 0 issues 40 rds., Speed Gold Dot 50 rds 0 issues, Hornady XTP’s 155 grain 30 rounds 0 issues, Federal HST’s 180 grain 40 rounds 0 issues and My handload of a Hornady 155 grain XTP 5.4 grains of Tight group, win case and primer 40 rounds 0 issues. The DAK trigger takes a little getting used to as it has 3 reset points all at differant pull weights so if you get in a hurry doing drills you end up with one smooth light but long pull followed by several short K40 length and pull weights unless you concentrate on allowing the trigger to go full stroke. I do have to change my grip from the fist grip to weaver due to the placement of the slide release and the size of my hands, I also have this problem with my issued Beretta 92D so that is a non issue other than my preferance to the fist grip. Also carrying the weapon in a OWB holster it is no more concealable than a Beretta. I guess its time to place another order with Desantis for a Cozy partner. Accuracy was superb with all but the MagTech HP’s and even then was more than good enough for defensive carry. Basicly if I could see it to 50 yds I could hit it. I ran myself through the dept qual course Standard FBI with my wife running the timer and had no problem scoring 100%. This pistol in .40 S&W is possibly the most comfortable pistol in that calliber I’ve ever shot and it showed in my qual times, recovery shot to shot was no differant than with my 92D 9mm.
So despite being assembled in the US on a West german frame I would have to say that the 229 is a hell of a fine firearm based on my limited experience with the pistol, we will see if long term 20-30,000 rounds if I still feel the same way.
great write up .Good looking weapon I had a W german 220 and it was a great pistol .I wish I would have hung on to it. let us know when you get 30k down the pipe ![]()
I give it points for being damn good looking. Glad it’s running good this far…
I’ll be the first to admit that the looks of a pistol weigh in my buying decision along with reputation, calliber and need. I bought the 229 because it is the substitute standard weapon for my dept., and I am a firearms instructor. I’ve never really been exposed to SIG Saur pistols so I figured I’d better bone up on this one in particular. I bought the SAS because I love two tone pistols and the grips were complete instead of having a chunk missing for the nonexistant de cocker. I’m thinking that this will not be my last SIG, A 239 in .40 or .357SIG will probably be my next purchase as the 229 is a little on the chubby side for summer carry. I’m also looking at picking up another barrel for this one in .357.
Congratulations on your new P229, and the nice write-up you provided us. I’m also a fan of the P229 DAK, finding it to be smoother than the HK LEM action. My P229 DAK was a factory special (READ: Factory getting rid of old stock), as it came with Trijicon nightsights, both .357 SIG and .40 barrels, and the older non-railed receiver, with the rounded triggerguard. Interestingly, it took about 300 rounds to break in for flawless performance with .357 SIG; .40 barrel was flawless from the start.
Although I’ve had several DA/SA P229’s in the past, the DAK trigger, and the gun’s performance in the Homeland Security/ICE trials were a significant factor in my purchase decision.
I use mine for carry, IDPA, and steel plate competition, and carry it in a Kramer or Galco IWB holster.
Best, Jon
I actually just put in my packet fot ICE/Homeland Security, I really hope it pans out. I also bought the ICE holster and a double mag carrier from Desantis, Not because I feel that confident in landing a job with them but it looked like a nice comfortable rig and I wasnt disappointed. I will still order a Cozy Partner after I get the wife calmed down over the initial investment. LOL
