Should I SBR my SCAR 16?

Ok that is a stupidly specific question that only I should be able to answer. I know, I know. But I am kind of at an impass here. I love my SCAR. Shoot great. Real tack driver. Weighs a metric F*ck ton but who cares.

However I just feel like this gun was made to be 10 or 11 inch gun. Normally I would just turn it into a pistol but since no SCAR receivers were imported as Pistols this isn’t an option.

So what are the Pros and Cons of SBRing the SCAR? Anything I should know?

I assume you’re talking about a 16 but just for clarity - SCAR 16 or 17?

Sorry about that. SCAR 16.

Are you Thinking of cutting down your current barrel or buying the FN 10" barrel assembly?

$1000 barrel replacement? Plus a stamp? Naw, I’m good.

I’d keep it a 16 and SBR something else.

Pros:
Piston gun so its a natural SBR
Piston gun so it works well with suppressors
Lightens the gun by almost a pound
Great reliability record
IMO with the KDG stock, forend, and a super scar trigger its an awesome SBR

Cons:
Expensive (your already know this)
May have to tweek the gas port system but there are aftermarket solutions
The upper is the serialized part so no easy swaps without changing out the barrel assembly = PIA
FN are a bit of bitches about the suppressors and warranties (would be the same with the 16")

Please don’t take offense to this (I own and love my 17) but I fall into the camp that the 16 has so few advantages over the M4 that its not worth it. But as an SBR you could make a case that the advantages the SCAR has are amplified. I ran one for about an hour with a KDG stock, forend, and a super scar trigger and I was envious and I have some nice SBRs. If you have the coin and its something you want I would do it.

Yes, SBR it.

Yes do it. It feels and looks a lot better after you do it. I had Class 3 Machine cut mine, mailed it on a Tuesday had the barrel back Friday of the same week, and it’s still very accurate.

#YOLO

Do it. Just have the barrel cut by someone who knows what they are doing, you’ll never want to go back to 16" after going to 10-10.5".

That KDG stock might be awesome if they ditched the stupid concave buttpad. Buttplates/pads should be flat, and either vertical or with an angled toe.

Talk to Magpul as they designed it. KDG just make the adapter hinge.

No offense taken. I am well aware it doesn’t do anything different or better than an AR. But like many things in life it isn’t just about if it is better or not. I have wanted one since I first saw them and now that I have my hands on one I find myself wanting to make it perfect for me. Currently it has a MI forward rail, a KDG stock and adapter on order and a Accupower 1-8 on top.

Long and heavy as hell. But oh so beautiful and laser accurate. But I don’t currently have an SBR, only a couple “pistols” and thought this might make a great SBR project. From what i am seeing that is indeed the case. Honestly I am less worried about function since it is a Piston and I have a local guy that does an extremely good job cutting barrels and fixing gas ports, not to mention other options listed here and more worried about the paperwork, etc with transporting it. Can we just get rid of the NFA now people???

Why not invest in a 10" barrel swap kit? Those quick change barrels are kinda pricey, but it gives you some adaptability for different uses. You could still splash groundhogs with your favorite gun.

As far as papers; keep reduced size copies of your stamp (s) with the weapon at all times, and don’t wander over the State line.

I keep copies of all of my stamps in my car at all times and have digital copies available in my online storage. I live 15 minutes from a state line and spend a lot of time in KY. So that isn’t always easy.

Yep, I have the same problem. If you have a few regular addresses you visit in KY you can just file a bunch of year long 5320.20.

Better to keep them on/near the weapon, if possible. In one of the tubes on a SOPMOD stock, is where I keep mine. Verts get removed and swapped sometimes. A stock; not so often in the field. Granted, storage options with a SCAR are super limited, but maybe tethered to a mag pouch. I also keep a set in the case, a ring binder in the safe, and in electronic format, backed up locally, online and to a flash drive. My thought is if there are guns all around, keep proof of ownership as readily available.

I chopped my 16" barrel early on (Marvin Pitts job), sold that barrel when factory barrels came out and now own a 10" and 14". Gun has never given me a malfunction since I bought it in 08’-09’, can’t say that for anything else in the safe.

It’s not hard to do a 5320.20, people make it out to be a much better deal than it really is.

The SCAR is a great weapon, I prefer my SCAR 17 13" SBR over the 16 (which is a 10.5" cut by Marvin Pitts). If KDG would finally come out with an MREX for the 10" SBR like they said they were going to do 2 years ago, it would be much better, as I have come to dislike the wide top to bottom rail distance. I might try PMM bottom rail stuff to see if that helps.

SCARs are alway very reliable / tolerant of minimal lube - MX. I put 800-ish rounds suppressed through my 17 over the course of 9 months with zero cleaning and only occasionally would I put some cheap remmy oil on the BCG at the range. It was dirty as hell, the gas regulator had to be turned using a Leatherman to get it out, but it never failed once.
