Years ago I bought a romanian WASR-10 from a friend back when I was dumb and thought an AK was an AK. The rifle has about 3000 rounds through it and has never given me any trouble. the FSB isn’t canted and the accuracy seems decent. the magwell is a bit loose but I don’t think it’s too bad (though I don’t have much to compare it to). I did a search and while I know they can be OK I couldn’t find out if they can be seriously trusted for really hard use. now I know as a civilian the chances of me needing a weapon like an AK47 to defend myself are slim at best. I don’t have delusions of being a “civilian sheepdog” and fighting off hordes of outlaws in the wake of a disaster or anything like that. BUT it would be nice to know that I had a rifle that would handle some serious use even though I’ll probably never need it for that. I really should take an AK class because it won’t matter how good my rifle is if I’m not fully versed in operating the gun so I guess the real question is if it’s ready to take on some professional instruction or not.
I don’t want to start any sort of SHTF/ end of the world thread I just want to know:
1.) are WASRs GTG?
2.) if not could they be made to be for not a ton of money?
I got a good deal on it so I’m confident I could sell it and at least break even and roll that money into an arsenal if I had to but that is money I could spend on ammo, training, and more mags.
sorry for the long post or if this has been answered before and I didn’t see it. and thank you in advance for taking the time to share your knowledge with me.
If it’s been working for you for 3K+ rounds, I’d say your WASR is good to go.
If you want to upgrade, a SGL-21 would be a good choice, you can keep your mags and ammo.
If you’re looking for an excuse to buy a new toy, I certainly won’t try to talk you down…but, not all WASR’s are crap, if you get a good one and it’s been running well for the amount of rounds you’ve put through it, it should keep running just fine.
well then I’ll be keeping this gun. I would like to get an AK74 so I think when the time comes I’ll spring for an arsenal. The parts to do a PG conversion on my saiga .308 are on the way and I’m not going to cheap out on that build. then when that’s all done I’ll work towards getting a couple quality AR15s in the stable. and all the while I’ll work on clearing out the junk I’ve acquired. I wish my town would do a gun buyback so I could unload the 3 cheapo shotguns I have for more than they’re worth:D
thanks for the help guys. A few weeks ago my friend Harry had some people he’d met through work over to his house and they’d never gone shooting before. we took them out and I opened the case with the AK in it and this pretty little gal points to it and says “what is THAT?” I told her that was my AK47 and her eyes got big and she got a big grin on her face. She was very excited to shoot everything I brought out that day, especially the AK and AR but unfortunately we were pressed for time so she only got to run a few rounds through each. she’s not going to run out and buy a bunch of guns (yet) but I think I was able to bring another one into the fold, which is good because her political leanings are pretty left otherwise.
When Wasrs have problems they are usually evident in the first few magazines or first few hundred rounds. Since yours has proven itslf I will echo what the other people have said that it is good to go.
yeah first I’ll build up my saiga .308 then trick out the WASR then maybe an arsenal SGL31 and a saiga 12. I’m tempted to get a galil just to round everything out. after my transfer I’ll be doing 12hr shifts instead of 8s so maybe an I’ll pull an OT shift or two every other weekend to make that happen a bit sooner. gunsgunsgunsgunsguns:jester:
I think everyone ought to have at least one AK. Know the most ubiquitous weapon extant - cannot go wrong - in particular your PROVEN carbine.
And… it is a good point to think about your children - even if it is a nephew, etc. Need to keep decent semi-autos in the hands of responsible citizens for the future.
