Shotshell Sling Options?

Hi all,

I’m not a mall ninja, but I’m new to shotguns.

I bought my sister and new BIL a 8-shot Mossberg 500 as a wedding present. Now I’m thinking accessories, and a shotshell sling makes a lot of sense to me.

I understand the problems with these (they’re heavy, and they pendulum if they’re not taut), but the extra weight will be welcome (the damned thing kicks like a mule when shooting buckshot), and if they sling up for a long shot, then it won’t pendulum.

It also seems like a decent way to carry extra ammo — she’s a lefty and he’s a righty, so a buttstock carrier or a side saddle won’t really work.

First Question: Which one?

I like the Ace and Bagmaster (Google “ace shotshell sling” and “bagmaster shotshell sling”). Of the two, the Bagmaster looks better on the errornet, but I’ve got an Ace pistol case and it’s fine, too.

I like the design of the King and G&P, too, but they’re airsoft…

I don’t want a Blackhawk or Eagle, because they attach with clips, and they’ll twist.

Second question: How to attach a sling to an 8-shot Mossberg? It’s got a sling swivel stud in the mag cap, but that’s absurd. I’m thinking of falling back on a Choate clamp (I’ve used these on my father’s Remington 1100, and they’re fine).

Please advise,

Bimmer

Thanks, Tracker…

Turns out that my BIL is a lefty, too, but that would mean putting a sidesaddle on the ejection port side of the gun, and there isn’t much space there. Now I’m thinking of a buttstock carrier…

Regarding the sling mount, the problem is the front mount, ideally right in front of the forend (when forward). Since they’re both lefties, I guess I can just put a Choate clamp on the right side of the gun…

If you’re suggesting a single point sling, then that’s hopeless… To me, a “single point sling” is an oxymoron. AFAIK, they basically function as lanyards, and it’s impossible to use them to “sling up” properly.

At this point I’ve ordered a Bagmaster shotshell sling…

Those shot shell slings are next to worthless…they really are a gimmick and trying to get a shell out of them to reload the shotgun gets commical.

Just get a side saddle, on the port side, and both of them can learn to reload from that position.

It’s stable, proven, and not a real handicap for a lefty.

A side saddle isn’t an issue for a leftie. I shoot my 870 weak hand, and it isn’t hard to learn reloads.

Shot slings are a bad idea for the reasons that you already listed.

If both users are lefty’s then a buttcuff is a no brainer. If more ammo is needed, add a side saddle. The left handed shooter will just need to reach under or over the receiver to access the shells in the side saddle. Bandoleer slings may look cool, but good luck reloading from a moving ammo source or any semblance of a good sight picture with 10+ rounds of 00 or slug swinging back and forth under your barrel.
