I want to hear the most up to date thinking on this subject. I know this has been discussed before. However, sometimes thinking on tactics evolve over time. And, sometimes new posters can add things that have not been considered before. Which do you prefer?
Please assume the following:
Money is not an object
The user would be equally trained on both systems.
Civil liability is not a concern.
This is not a Katrina / End of the world riot situation.
I am looking at this purely from the viewpoint of which system would best allow you to engage and defeat one or more people who have entered your home with deadly intent.
I choose a shotgun with #7 shot or 00 buck aimed at the hip girdle of the target.
Copper dot slugs are in a side saddle on the blackhawk cheek rest just in case they are needed. There is an integral “bandolero” on my blackhawk sling that can hold another 15 rounds of whatever I want.
I go with the shotgun for home defense. In most case, the sound of a shotgun being chambered will run off most home intruders and in the situations that it doesn’t you don’t have to worry so much about aiming in the dark. All you need is general direction.
I am an avid AR guy for all sorts of problem solving; but for the home defense circumstance while the AR is acceptable/ useful I find it difficult to say it’s going to be better than my Shotgun.
Actually, it is best advised to keep your weapon in condition 3 until you intend to use it i.e. before clearing a house. Even some of the most veteran of carriers can have an accidental discharge while trying to withdraw the pistol from it’s holster if a round is chambered.

the sound of racking a shotgun is good for making your presence known and giving the intruder a good location for directing fire, and that’s about it. furthermore, even with a full choke, at CQB distance, you STILL need to aim and aim well… you have the disadvantage of a slower firing, slow reloading, low-capacity weapon- you gotta make your shots count.
as to the OP’s question- M4 SBR with an RDS and white light with a momentary switch. high capacity, very fast accurate firing, fast reload, very compact… perfect HD weapon.
I trust a pump shotgun to work much more reliably then ANY semi-auto platform. (Not hating on ARs)
The “racking of a shotgun slide” is a good defense ONLY against someone you KNOW to be unarmed. With that said, you can never assume someone is unarmed.
OK, let me say this. I tried to keep my answer short but it doesn’t appear others think along the same line as me. First, I am going on the assumption that I am not defending against russian paratroopers.
Second, as I rack my shotgun I am not going to stand in the same spot. I will move quickly to a different area.
Third, my wife will be in my bedroom on the floor, any children will hopefully be in their room. and I will also be firing over their head.
Finally, I don’t know about anyone else, but I do not have NVG by my bed, and I sleep in a very dark house. I would prefer to announce myself in the event, that the “intruder” may be friendly. If they hear my shotgun, they can call out to me if they are friendly.
As far as the pistol comment, I refferred back to my training documentation and corrected myself in another thread. Condition 1 is in fact the preferred holster condition. I was wrong, and was thinking of range safety. My mistake.
First of all, I’m sorry for the harsh response. It has been one of those days. We are all here to learn (myself so more than most).
However, reread bkb0000’s and many previous post showing the AR to be a superior weapon platform whether you are defending against Russian paratroopers or just one person.
Also one would want to id. the target before firing (thus the white light and no need for nvg).
Honest question: doesn’t anyone think that a white light would give your position away? yes it can be blinding a little but I am pretty sure I could aquire a general direction to spray fire even though I couldn’t see?
