Ok, so I have a Winchester 120 12ga with a 26 or 28 inch barrel, a Rem 870 12ga tactical with 18.5 inch barrel, and just got a Mossberg 930 12ga with 28 inch field and 18.5 inch HD barrel.
I don’t know anything about shotgun ammo. Here are my questions if you’re patient enough for such newbie questions.
1)Shot size. This is the pellet size right? Is higher number smaller like in the gauge of the shotgun? And what size would I usually want to use for shooting trap?
2)Steel vs lead shot. Does any barrel shoot both types? Or does it depend on barrel type (like long 28" vs short 18.5"), or is it just what the mfg rates it at? Also, does it depend on wether your barrel has a choke? In other words are chokes only supposed to shoot lead? Or are chokes rated for what they can shoot? And am I safe to assume that if a barrel or choke can shoot steel it can also shoot lead? Am I right to assume that steel is more demanding on a barrel or choke than lead?
That’s all I can think of for now. Thanks.
