I was wondering what people like or prefer. I have read other places that people do not really like the design of the locking verison on the SB. I am also aware that it is easier to change your turret with the non-locking version and it has a lower profile. So I guess there are + and - to both.
I have only used the S&B Short Dot II with the locking turrets. I am satisfied and see no real disadvantage or cons against them on the scope.
The real question will be whether you can even find a Short Dot. My understanding is they are somewhat scarce.
I was unaware there was interchangability: replacement of the turrets. I still would stick with the exposed turrets myself. I like the ability to change elevation on demand if a far shot is required.
I would try to find both if possible to see the difference. Though the few I have seen in the recent past were all the locking exposed turrets.
If you decide to go with the non-locking/ capped turrets then I would just get a Swaro 1-6X with the BRT reticle.
In my experience with both scopes, I feel the strengths of the SD over the other similar quality type models are the locking turrets, the build quality/ durability, and lastly the CQB reticle.
I would advise to try a few models before making a purchase. If your local dealers don’t carry one, try some of the local 3-gun type matches because you will likely come across one.
If you decide to purchase one, then I would strongly recommend the CQB reticle whether you go with the locking/ exposed turrets.
The non-locking turrets aren’t capped on the Short Dots, they are exposed. On the Short Dot LE, the elevation is locking, and the windage is capped and has a finger adjustable turret with the posicon gauge thing on it.
Given the choice, I would take the locking. I don’t know whats not to like about it, its incredibly easy to use and probably one of the stronger features of the scope. The cam is easy to change, and can be changed without changing the zero. Granted when you buy one now you only get one cam, and S&B doesn’t make custom ones but hey…
I sold off my Short Dot. It was heavy and expensive for what it is. Some of the new Leupold scopes (Firedot) give near the same capability and no where near the price. The Short Dot LE has actually went up in price. The new retail seems to be about $2950.
As to S&Bs quality, I can’t really speak to that. I had a problem with mine and had to send it in for service. I admit that whole experiance , waiting 6 months after ordering, then having to send it away for another six weeks…it kind of left a sour taste in my mouth.
