I’m seeing cans get shorter but fatter in the 5.56 realm. Recently shot a YHM Cat’s A$$, and I’m wondering if there are any decent 30cal equivalents on the market. First thought is for full-time use on a 300BO, but points if it’ll also suppress 308.
I really ought to get a .30 cal can. I do prefer a shorter fatter can too. I’m so out of touch with what’s out there these days though.
The Rex Silentium MG7k is fairly short and fat.
See! Here he goes with a bunch of names and models I’ve never even heard of. ![]()

Don’t feel bad. They don’t advertise at all. Price tag reflects that.
The DA Wolfman is a modular can. Not rated for 308, but does 300BO.
In K config (no mount) it is 5.13"
For refererence - SR-30 with Forward Controls Xeno mount 6310XE:
I don’t even understand how a can couldn’t be “rated” for 308. Assuming 308 is on a 16" (at least) barrel, the round isn’t that punishing. I guess it’s a really light weight can?
Not sure. It isn’t mentioned on their website, but a quick call or email might say otherwise and you might be good.
The Wolfman is a 9mm can meant for the likes of a MP5, but can handle some rifle uses.
The Rex can is a rifle can, made in whatever bore you buy. It can tolerate magnum rifle cartridges or silly barrel lengths, or if bought with the appropriate bore diameter, a MP5 too.
The difference sounds subtle here, but the distinctions are important.
Edit: I don’t mean to imply that Rex is the only option. Just the first to spring to mind for short and fat.
Personally I can’t wait until the cycle of cans come back to thick, as opposed to thin cans. Volume matters.
Polonium 30 regular or the K. Just grabbed the Polonium regular for 556 which has a bore for 6mm as a bonus. Very well priced about $500.
C.A.T. ODB (Old Dirty Bastard) or C.A.T. DD (Dirty Dave) would be on my short list for .300 Bkackout and .308, especially on a gas gun since they utilize 3d printing to achieve surge bypass so they will not over gas the weapon.
I recently got a C.A.T. JL (Johnny Law) which is their full size .308 suppressor at 8.55” X 1.75” and it is proving to be very pleasant to shoot. Nice decibel reduction, nice tone, happy on a bolt gun or a gas gun.
For anyone that hasn’t been following the latest in silencers, “Surge Bypass” is what C.A.T. calls their backpressure reduction design, since OSS/Hux trademarked “Flow Through”.
The PTR Vent and Spiritus design has me interested. A video of the Spiritus on a 5.56 10.5" was pretty ridiculous.
Please elaborate, this has my interest.
Here is a video where it is compared it to the Dillon, Centurion, and CAT.
3D printed Inconel.

The guys first video was a different environment and wasn’t as thorough. Regardless, he could shoot with a 10.3" without ears which is a feat in itself.
I watched both videos and yeah, that is a really quiet suppressor. I’ve got two YHM Fat Cats, one on a 10.5” and the other on a 16” and they are pretty darn close to the one in the video. I’ve shot both without ear pro just to see how quiet and, while the 10.5 was noticeably blastier it wasn’t painful in any way. In a pinch if the SHTF and I grabbed that gun without ear pro I wouldn’t be too concerned. Although if the SreallyHTF ear pro would be down the list of concerns.
Not sure they’re identical methods, the HUX cans flow more, but the C.A.T. cans offer better signature reduction.
The full size JL is one of the quietest .308 cans Pew Science has tested. If memory serves its in the top 5.
Not sure what the back of a HUX can looks like but here is a C.A.T., you can see the vents in the blast chamber that move some gas forward to be reintroduced further down the suppressor.
The “end cap” has an integrated flash hider, and my example is on their open source QD which is a 1”X16 LH thread and utilizes a taper mount interface.
No, they’re definitely not identical. But they both use a technique of metering flow that bypasses all baffles contiguously, vs old-school no bypass, or simply adding vent ports in each (or just some) individual baffles like Surefire.
Yea…the Vent 2 for 9mm is pretty much video game quiet on an MP5/MP5 clone.

I would bet PTR is developing a 300BO version of the Spiritus. If not, they are missing the boat.
