Shooting Gloves

What’s the best combat shooting glove on the market now? I used to wear a short black nomex gloves (similar to flight gloves) a few years back. When they disappeared I subbed some nice Orvis skeet-type gloves I got as a gift. I decided to preserve those for… well… skeet. I’ve been doing range work only sans gloves for a while now, but would like to know what’s worthy out there for the next excursion.
Many thanks in advance.

what qualifies something as the best? How often do you shoot? And will you be wearing them to do other things? gloves tend to wear out quickly. your going to get mechanix, flight glove answers etc. I don’t suggest going and spending 80 bucks on a set of gloves unless your life requires it.

Thanks Shoot 1st, you’re absolutley right. That’s why I retired the Orvis gloves, as the fine kid leather was wearing very fast on the range, albeit CONUS. The nomex were pretty good until they disappeared. I was just wondering what was out there that is new and any good, seeing that there are so many manufacturers in the game now. Too many decisions. Maybe I’m too lazy!
My application is simply weapons handling, i.e. no rapelling, climbing, etc.
Thaks again for the quick response!

Mechanix Wear FTW! http://www.mechanix.com/tactical

My needs are simple - hand protection with good flexibility so I buy the $17 basic model. Does everything I need except be tacticool. They have other, more grrrr-looking gloves though for those interested in the appearance aspect.

Hmac is right on the money. I get mine off amazon for cheap. When they wear out I just use a new pair.

Gloves are definitely wear items, at least it I don’t lose them first. I quit buying high end ones and the ones we’re issued tend to be too hot and stiff for my taste.

To answer your question though the best ones I’ve seen are the Vickers Mid-Length Combat Gloves. A buddy of mine has a pair and they’ve held up for at least the last two years of good honest use, and he’s Russian. The standard Nomex flight gloves are decent but tend to tear if you’re doing any kind of manual labor or a lot of climbing. They were designed for pilots afterall.

Looks good guys, I think I’ll try Mechanix!

Alco has some for 3.99 a pair. I cut a few fingers off and often wear only one! My ext. mag release on the G17 HURTS! They wear out and I buy another pair.

I use throw away gloves because they wear out. I REFUSE to spend $30+ on gloves, If you ask me, my $3.99 Alco gloves are the best on the market…they suit my needs

Oakley makes some awesome gloves too

My favorites are the Wiley X hybrid. They are too damn expensive, so I usually get the Condor knock offs on Ebay for about $35.

My main gloves are standard issue Nomex flight gloves. Free to me, and they work really well.

I own a pair of Oakley gloves. Nice, but really expensive if you pay civilian prices. The stitching is a little questionable as well. Mine have held up well for about year now though.

I have some cheapo 5.11 gloves that have been used regularly for about 4 years now, and they have been real champs. They really are nothing special, but have held up great, and fit real nice. I wear them with ski glove liners for winter shooting a lot too.

For anyone thinking about paying more than $30 for shooting gloves, think twice. Get something cheap and disposable with a reasonable level of durability.

I agree with both of these things.

The one caution on the flight gloves is that there are a LOT of knockoffson the market, to the point that it’s harder to find the real thing than the fakes. When my originals went TU and I was sourcing replacements it was a NIGHTMARE to find them. and the knockoffs aren’t just a quality problem, even the sizing and shape was completely ridiculous. The one pair was cut like it was made for the Simpsons.

But, once you can source some good ones, get several pair and just look at them as disposable. I wear mine through in several areas before changing them out.

Outdoor Research Overlord (short) are the best ones I have ever used, and I have used many down range. Flight gloves are good but they just do not last.

At that price they better last. Do they really outlive flight gloves at a rate of 4-5x as long? Because they cost 4-5x as much.

Yes they do and then some. I have a pair that are on their 3 deployment and I normaly go through 2-3 pair of flight gloves per trip.

As far as civilian usage, what are shooting gloves used for? I get that you need them if you’re going to put a ton of ammunition down range in a hurry for heat etc., and I do plan on picking a pair up for winter outdoorsing and shooting (it doesn’t really get THAT cold down here) but what are some other benefits to using them as opposed to just shooting bare handed?

I get issued the camelbak nomex/goat leather gloves in tan, and I fucking love them. My oakleys stitching didn’t last for shit.

Gloves are good for 3 guns depending on how you load shotguns, and its always good with rifles. I still have a normal handguard on mine so I tend to grab a little FSB.

I almost never use gloves… but I can tell you how quickly a range session turns shitty when you injur your hand setting up or moving steel targets… or mash/pinch a finger by going too fast during some drill or something.

Shooting with a hand injury just sucks.

I used to think, and am coming back to thinking, that they are a detriment but as markm mentions spending a lot of time with the rifle increases the likelihood of an injury. I started using gloves when I was shooting the AK which is even more injury-inducing.

I have a pair of the standard Mechanix gloves and they are great for shooting. My one issue with them is the cuff closure placement at the inside of the wrist. When wearing them in the field, the cuff closure is constantly snagging on my gear and coming undone.

I am currently trying out the tan Petzl Cordex gloves. I liked that their cuff closure is on the top of the wrist and they aren’t too bad to wear in the AZ summer heat.

They run kind of large and are not as form fitting as the Mechanix. I wear medium in the Mechanix and ended up buying a pair of the Petzls in small.

They are working well in the field, but I haven’t been able to do much shooting with them yet. I’m confident they will perform well shooting an M4 but may be a little too thick for a pistol.

Obviously you don’t run an AK much.
