Just saw Shooter today.
This is an awesome story with lots of shooting that does make you feel that there IS justice.
Two thumbs up.

glad you enjoyed it. i wanted to see it tonight. i got to go food shopping instead…:o
I was disappointed.
As a stand-alone movie, it was probably okay. As an adaptation of Point of Impact, it was a failure.
Point of Impact was about the character, Bob Lee Swagger and his principles. “Shooter” had almost no character development, but instead was just a binch of visually impressive action sequences strung together.
Bob Lee Swagger was supposed to be a middle aged, experienced, man from Arkansas, not a post-adolescent wannabe gangster rapper from the east coast who is known to be anti-RKBA.
The only things that I noticed about “Shooter” that came from the book were some names, the USMC connection, and the shooting theme.
The overall “feel” was far more anti-American than the book as well. Some of the wisecracks about Iraq and the war on terrorists would not be something Bob Lee Swagger would tolerate!
When I saw Antoine Fuqua’s name on the screen as director at the beginning, I had a sinking feeling. It pretty much turned out to be exactly what I’d expect from him. I wish someone like John Milius had been hired to direct the film!
This is what I was afraid of from reading a few reviews. I’m surprised that Stephen Hunter allowed that to happen. His books are fun reads. Earl and Bob Swagger are uncompromising characters and certainly not what you guys describe in the film. Guess I’ll pass on this one.
This whole story and set of characters are pure fiction. I never read the book so I was not disappointed with the movie adaptation, but the movie is visually riviting with all the special effects even if it is a pretty far out story line.
There is lots of action and it is entertaining as an action movie.
I too have not read the book so i was not dissapointed with the movie. as a matter of fact i cant wait to pick it up when its released on dvd. i enjoyed it as much as i did 300 last weekend. i too could have done without the stabs taken at the Iraq situation but im not going to let that ruin a movie. as for Mark Walhberg i think hes a good actor that has veered away from the whole “rap” scene. give the guy a break its been like 15 years since he has done that stuff.
Firearms technical advisors were Front Sight Institute.
I’ve been considering watching it, but the whole situation around Wahlberg would probably make the movie bittersweet at best. I would excuse a fellow if he made a dumb mistake or two in the past, but the guy has repeatedly carried out hate-crime type beatings, and has been, what I consider, vehemently anti-gun…not just 15 years ago. Maybe chock it up to being a slow learner, or he just really doesn’t care.
Of course, the piece I read (here: http://www.keepandbeararms.org/information/XcIBViewItem.asp?ID=2360) seems more jocular in nature, I cannot verify his past. Either way, it strikes a sour chord with me.
If I looked into it, I would probably ruin a lot of movies I liked by finding out those actors are probably anti-gun as well (as is the stereotypical Hollywoodian). Maybe I should just wait and bum my way to a friend’s house when he picks up a copy so I can get my guilty pleasure of an action flick in without contributing a dime to their cause.

So true so I don’t seek out their silly opinions or history so as to ruin the "character’ they are acting in a film. Sad thing is if the truth be told most of the industry would not relate well to those who cherish the second amendment. Some however are so "in your face’ about their opinions as if they mean any more than anyone elses or mine that even if they are a good actor I don’t care about seeing them. So I hear you, but you just might like the movie anyway.
Never read the book and don’t care to. I liked the movie, a lot. I care less about Mark’s past, the director’s political views, etc…
I go to movie’s to be entertained and they succeeded in that. Was it realistic, maybe in some area’s and maybe not in others.
Relax and enjoy the movie and the guns in it. I did.
I suspect he probably sold the rights to the project and then had limited input after that.
I didn’t read or watch any reviews before I went so I could see it without prejudice. Sounds like I reached the same conclusions as the reviewers you mentioned!
Cant wait to see it.
He’s repeatedly carried out hate-crime type beatings? Never heard anything about that before, whats the deal?
I’m a Wahlberg fan and I’m saddened to hear that he is anti-RKBA but never heard about this other stuff.
i saw it today as well and enjoyed it. i will pick it up on d.v.d. when it comes out. if he really is anti r.k.b.a., then he is just another one of hollywoods left wind hypocrits.
it is getting ahrder and harder to enjoy a movie without the politics behind the actors ruining it for me.
Marky Mark in da house! LoL.
I saw it this past week. I really like it. I will get it on DVD and will probably go see it in the theaters again before it leaves for DVD.
I have not read the book so I did not know what to expect. What I really liked about it was that the action and storyline did not seem far fetched and unrealistic like a lot of movies. There were some parts that I was like yeah right, but overall it was believable.
