Shipping NFA items via common carrier

Hello All,

I will be permantently moving out of AZ :frowning: and need to have my nfa items (SBR and Machinegun) shipped via common carrier to Pennsylvania. I have submitted the 5320.20 and waiting on the approval. If I ship the items myself, must the items be shipped to a FFL/SOT in PA or can I ship them to myself at a residence? I’ve read that Fedex and UPS only ship firearms to an FFL but I hear conflicting stories on the reality of that. The other option is that I ship them using a FFL/SOT here in AZ and they go either to a FFL/SOT in PA or possibly direct to the residence in PA. This method seems to make the most sense. I also have a bunch of other non-nfa pistols and long guns that need to go as well.

Just curious if others have done this and which way makes the most sense?

Thanks for the help -

Direct to residence. Have someone there to bring them inside. You must open them personally. I wouldn’t worry too much about UPS or FedEx. They have been known to get pissy, especially with C&Rs, so I just put the person’s last name on the box with “Arms” after it, ie ship it to RJG Arms. They figure they’re an FFL. Never had a problem doing it that way.

It is not Fedex or UPS business to analyze what type of FFL you have.

Really?

I did more checking - UPS per their website says they DO allow non-licensees to ship to a non-licensee (to me in care of xxx) that is legally allowed to recieve it. But they do NOT allow machineguns. Other nfa items are ok. Not sure if the no-machinegun rule applies to licensees or not.

Fedex - allows shipping from an individual only to a licensee for any firearm. So I would need a SOT on the receiving side. Or shipping from a SOT here to me at the receiving address would be ok.

USPS - Unless I missed something it seems they don’t have any restrictions on individuals shipping NFA items to legally allowed individuals (except handguns) as long as the addressee can legally receive it. Insuring the items for their value may be a problem though.
