Shipping Ammo

Any one know how this is done? Gonna make the Magpul class in April but need to find out who or how this can be done without taking class. Already have more than enough rounds for class. FYI, shipping out of Honolulu.

Alaska Air

Are you talking about shipping ammo from Hawaii to destination via common carrier or on the aircraft?

If via UPS it is fairly easy. Go to UPS, address it and then send it off. Make sure it is packaged good.

As for on the aircraft, you may want to contact them and ask what the restrictions are for quantities.

You can ship it with UPS. You will need to take it to the UPS hub not a UPS store. Mark the package ORM-D.

I can only imagine the cost of shipping from Hawaii. You may be better off have an on line retailer ship some to your class.

^^^^This.

An airline will definitely not allow you to take with you the quantities that you will need for a class.

UPS is easy–like mentioned, you just need an “ORM-D” sticker, although I believe it needs to be the one that says “ORM-D Small Arms Cartridges”

But 5pins is correct about not using a UPS store and going to a hub instead, and that the cost will be substantial.

Not necessarily–the hubs I’ve used have the same rates as UPS Stores.

Also, it is NOT true that UPS Stores unilaterally will not handle ammo–call ahead and let them know that YOU are aware of how it needs to be labelled, and that it will be properly labelled before you arrive. Varies from store to store whether they feel comfortable handling it.

Many UPS hubs will not and rather than deal with the aggravation it is easier to just go to the hub.

As for the expense. If he already owns and has the ammo it is probably smarter than buying ammo somewhere else.

I definitely do not know that which is why you should inquire. I have flown before with 750 rounds of ammo in checked in luggage.

Since I have no idea what his requirements are it can’t hurt to ask.

Interesting! I stand corrected.

How long ago was that, and did you declare it at the counter?

Once when flying Northwest, I was told at the counter that the limit was “5 lbs of ammo”–no exceptions. It was a while ago, and things may have changed (although I would have a hard time believing it would have changed to allow MORE!)

It’s been a few years. It was an international flight from Europe to the U.S. I declared it because it was illegal otherwise.

Certainly. I believe it is also required for all US-domestic flights as well–at least I have declared it every time I’ve flown with ammo.

I believe you’re right. As far as quantity, I think that may be up to the individual airlines.

I’ve been skiddish to fly with much in the way of ammo since that idiot tried smuggling a crap load of primers out of the country and a bunch torched off in his baggage. I figured any kind of quantity was probably going to generate the full blown shakedown.

Why not contact the host and have it shipped to him direct from a vender on the board??? Why ship it from Hawaii? I think It would cost less to buy ammo and have it delivered just my $.02.

Dave

Even if it’s not less, I think the difference would still make it worthwhile to just buy new.

Since the OP hasn’t specified yet, let me throw this out there. Assuming that he already has the ammo (bought and paid for) someone explain how it would be cheaper to buy new ammo somewhere and ship it.

If I had ammo I already bought that I paid $200 a case for, that would cost $75 a case to ship, and I could ship new ammo in at $200 a case instead… personally, I would consider that cheaper…

I don’t see how, but OK. :agree:

The only way it would be ‘cheaper’ is if you were already planning on using the ammo you have in local shooting, and would require additional ammo for the class. (Sunk vs incremental costs)
