shades of green: OD v. Ranger v. Foliage

I see several different discriptions of shades of green when it comes to chest rigs, puoches, slings, etc.

OD green, Ranger green, Foliage green, even one called Sewer green.

I’m not sure I really understand what color each of these are. Any explanations or better yet, visual comparison of these colors would be a big help.

What are your thoughts on the useful applications of these variations?

While we’re at it, how about Khaki v. Coyote Tan v. Coyote Brown. What are the real differences?

OD green is green with a yellow tint.
Ranger green is green with a brown tint.
Smoke green/smoke grey/mouse grey is green with a grey tint.
No sure on foliage except that it’s very light green.

Khaki is a light tan.
Coyote is a darker, browner tan.
Coyote tan and coyote brown are the same.

And lets not forget Flat Dark Earth which looks more Khaki than Coyote to me.

To my eye FG is more on a grey scale.

Funny nylon trivia, Ranger green and smoke green come from the same rolls of fabric.

A unit (guess which one) wanted smoke green gear, but not from the people who market “smoke green” so they called it…you guessed it…Ranger green.

Sewer green is Emdom’s name for the above greens and has been adopted by a few other vendors.

I wonder what color green they’d give to the crap I’ve been coughing up the last three days. It’s been a rough week for jmart.

Lung Butter Green

Not to be confused with Tuberculosis Tan.

LBG, by golly, we just coined a new tacticool color!

I think foliage is grey with a green tint. It’s like faded smoke green the same way smoke is like faded OD.

You owe me one new keyboard …

And Dave P: Thanks for the written description. Clear & concise.

OK, so I take it this one is Foilage Green:

Based on the choices I guess this must be FDE but it looks kinda yellow to me:

Am I right that this would be the Ranger or Smoke Green:

This one was also called Ranger Green but looks lighter than the color above:

Which color is this:

Is this a brown or OD or what. Hopefully one of you guys that is better at identifying colors can help me out with this last one.

That’s either FDE or Coyote, at least that’s what it looks like to me.

A computer monitor isn’t the best way to tell colors. You’ve got the variables of lighting in the original photograph to contend with, then you have the issue of how your monitor renders the colors. Your best bet is to hit the closest shop to you and check some colors out. It needn’t be nylon, any chance you have to look at rail covers/ladders, stocks, grips, etc. will give you a good idea about FDE vs OD vs FG.

Dark Earth in most incarnations is a grayer brown while Coyote is a browner brown. Both are medium light “deseret brown” colors.

Foliage Green is a gray green and I believe comes from one of the darker greens in the ACU pattern

I personally like foliage green myself. All depends what you are doing with it though.

Foliage green is the only green in the UCP (ACU is the uniform). The other colors are an urban gray and desert tan.

Foliage seems rather Minty to me, but I have color vision issues.

Foliage Green (Magpul,Tangodown, Ergo and BlueForceGear)

Norrells moly resin finish’flat desert tan’, Gunners are called ‘Coyote brown’.

OD Green (Magpul and Daniel Defense).

Magpul stock (flat dark earth), Tangodown grip (flat dark earth), Norrells moly resin finish on VTAC tube and the barrel (flat desert tan, barrel is discolored a little from the heat).
