Seems to me that’s a rather volatile section of the world to leave your family defenseless.
I know there was fighting there in the '90’s, I don’t know who was on which side, or what the fighting was about.
This makes me wonder if they are opening themselves up to be the victims of a future genocide.
For the amount of guns (third in the world I have heard?), they have very strict gun laws. Most people who have them, have them illegally, and the government is really cracking down on illegal possession. Before their recent ‘mass shootings’ it was more ‘out of sight out of mind’ but the shootings have made the government feel like they have to take action.
Probably a prelude to tyranny/genocide as it always is. I remember some story about one of those countries where a lady was pouring motor oil on her flowerbed and a tourist asked what up with that? A local says, it’s so the AKs don’t rust.
Well, the lack of arms is always foundational to a genocide, sure. But that’s not the impetus. Like I said, they are one of the most-armed nations on Earth, and for decades the government has more or less turned a blind eye in spite of harsh anti-gun laws. But the recent ‘mass shootings’ have forced their hand. Now whether they are using that as a pretext for something bigger, I do not know.
There was a guy from Bosnia with a website who lived through the mess there in the early 90s. He and his family lived in a fairly large city and it was surrounded by the various factions, cutting them off from most everything for a year. They had to learn to survive quickly as things went from normal to kill or be killed SHTF with a quickness.
It’s a sobering story, thinking of having your family in the middle of that kind of situation. I think he’d written a book about it also. He also said nearly everyone in that area of the world has firearms stashed, regardless of any laws. I’ll add his name if I can pry it outta my dusty brain.
Ok, his nom de plume was “Selco,” looks like some of his stuff is in Internet Archive if anyone is interested.
I remember what happened in Yugoslavia in the '90s… And so do the people living there now. If people are turning over firearms, they aren’t turning them all over. Europeans have memories that last hundreds of years.
On a slightly different note. Curious how quickly they moved to ban guns after this relatively unprecedented mass shooting, no?
If it’s time to oil the AKs, it’s time to use the AKs…
The left gun grabbers are always talking about how the EU doesn’t have these mass shootings or gun violence. And they think that is proof of their argument, and then they ignore the 6 million dead Jews, 6 million others, the 8 million Stalin starved and the serious numbers in Asia with 50million or so in China alone.
Yes, guns kill people and they are dangerous, and that pales in comparison to when your own govt decides to start killing. If you are worried about deaths, we need more people with guns, not less.
They also tend to ignore stabbings, because beind dead from a knife is better than dead from a gun. Everyone knows that (hence the fixation on “gun crimes” or “gun deaths”).
I have a friend at work who came to the US in the 90s from Yugoslavia with his parents. He had stories of laying in bed and machinegun fire coming through the bedroom wall.
A few years ago I bought an AK from his parents. They had more rifles than family members.
To quote his dad “Ive seen what happens when you don’t have anything to protect yourself. Never again”.
