I have been thinking about selling my Rem 870 in order to afford a Benelli M4 or similar Benelli Auto. The 870 is over 12 yrs. old and has had a lot done to it. When I purchased it I put some upgrades on it and they are as follows:
Mesa LEO stock
Speed Feed Forend
Hi-Vis Follower
Scattergun Tech Extension
New 18.5" Rifle sights in fixed IC Barrel
Vang Comp Oversized safety
Mesa 6-Shell Side Saddle
Carrier dog follower spring, sear spring and Extractor
Parkerized the Barrel and Receiver as well as other misc. parts
Mesa Picatinny Rail clamp
All the above work was done this las summer ('09) by J.D. at AI&P Tactical.
Reason I want to sell is not only because I have wanted an M4 for a long time but also want an auto.
Is there any specific reason you want an auto/M4 other than want? Do you think you can recoup some of the $$$ put into your 870? It is a buyers market out there right now. I try not to sell other guns solely because of “wants”. I like to get tangible returns, or benefits in the longer term like switching from HK USP45s to Glock 9mms I get cheaper ammo and parts which translates into more range time and increased proficiency for me. Same with ARs to an extent. Or recently I have been selling other 7.62 guns to get FALs.
Actually, I want to mainly because of “feel” as I love the way my cousins M4 feels compared to my 870 after multiple furniture changes. I wish I could keep the 870 and get the M4 but I am currently trying to attend an Appleseed Shoot and purchase an AR.
I think you should keep the 870 and just save up and get the M4 as you can.
You will lose a lot of the money that you’ve invested in the 870 with all the custom parts and work done on it. People won’t want to pay you what you’ve put into it.
You can buy a Remmy 1100 Tac2 for about $650. Since the receiver is very similar, you can transfer parts over easily. The receiver of the Tac2 is already pretapped for a rail. I have both the 1100 Tac2 and 870 express
The length of pull on Benelli’s has kept me from owning one. I have one that belongs to my father in the safe. Very nice gun. Of course you could good to the trouble of very carefully cutting the stock down but I would not bother with it. I like 13" of pull that the Speedfeed stocks give me on my 870’s. That said I really like the idea of auto loading shotguns as it prevents a lot of the operator errors that occur with shooters not well versed in pump guns. In summation if you are used to an 870 I’d save your money and continue to use them.
I just put the urbino stock on my M4, and it points and moves a bit faster.
Having shot a friend’s 870 at the range, I have to say I prefer the M4, if for no other reason than the fact that it’s the first gun I ever lusted after. Shooting it makes me smile.
“I have never been taken with the idea of selling a gun. When you possess a firearm, you possess something of importance. If you trade it for cash, you have lost it − and the cash in your hand will soon be gone. Sell something else!” - Col. Jeff Cooper, Cooper’s Commentaries, Vol. 1, No. 2
I concur. I have a plain jane 870 Police with wood furniture. Out of all my guns it is my favorite. New is cool but you will regret selling old reliable. Save the scratch to get the M4. You’ll appreciate it all the more.
Damn this thread is old! I ended up selling my barrel and installing one with chokes, now trying to hock the stock and get a synthetic one. I agree about the whole not selling a gun thing unless its traded for another gun!
Sorry G19,
I’m gonna keep the 870 I was thinking of selling it for Benelli’s M4 not an M4 carbine, sorry for the confusion. Tried sending a pm but the system didn’t let me.
I think I had my settings set up wrong but I am sure it is good to go now. That is fine no issue…can’t go wrong with the M4 good luck with your choice.
