Seeking Info. on Colt R6520, "Govt. Carbine"

Hello Guy’s,

I finally got around to inspecting the contents of my long-guns safe, & decided to do a routine wipe off of my Colt 6520, Government Carbine. I've had it since early 1994 or so, when I purchased it brand new & have never gotten around to firing it. My questions are; 1) Which buffer type should it have come with ? It appears to have a standard carbine model, without any visible markings. 2) I could have sworn that it had a barrel date present, but after taking off the handguards today, I can't seem to find one ? I "think" I recall seeing a bbl date when installing some new handguards maybe 10 years or so ago, but I can't seem to locate it now ? ( See what happens as soon as you hit the big 50 !!! ) I've never had to use it, as I always had my Colt 6721 ready to go. After the 6721 starting getting too heavy, ( as many said it soon would ) I dumped it & picked up a very nice 6920, which I absolutely love. I'll tell you though, after picking up that featherweight 6520 again, I hate to put it back in the safe. It's still NIB, so I plan to keep it that way in case I ever need a quick trade piece. My 6920 will do everything I will ever need a 5.56mm carbine for. Sooo, if anyone can answer the above 6520 related queries for me, I'd be very much appreciative. THANK YOU

                     Regards, dpast32

I have a Sporter Lightweight SP6520 of roughly the same vintage (1991), and it had an unmarked carbine buffer. The spent cases were landing well forward of 3:00, so after a while I swapped in a BCM H-marked buffer, which brought the pattern more toward 3:00. It has always run really well, I was probably worrying for nothing when I swapped in the H.

I haven’t seen a barrel date mark at all.

If you still have the box and the plastic bag, the bag has a date stamped on it. This should be very close to the manufacture date of your gun.

THANK’S for the replies so far. I just went down stairs & checked it’s original shipping bag. The bag has multiple ( and I do mean multiple ) “MARCH 1991” stamped all over the bag in blue color, which appears to have been added during the bag’s manufacture. It also has a single, black ink stamp in the middle of the bag, right next to the little serial number sticker. It’s stamped, “MAY 9T”, or what appears to look like an odd style “T” or really unusual type of number “1” ?? I always thought that it was circa early 1994 production, but perhaps it was an earlier mfg piece. It’s serial # is GC 0095XX.
