Secondary light sources and methods for the carbine?

I think just about everyone has a mounted light on their carbine, but what do you carry for a backup and how do you deploy it when you primary goes down?

I carry a spare G2 (with a mod I made) that can be used for parts on the 6P that I have mounted on the gun.

Working drills tonight I was wondering what everyone’s plan is for when their weapon light goes down?

I found using the G2 in the Graham method works well for handguns and against the VDF on my carbine. I just added the VDG but did not think about this added benny when I did so.

What are you guys using / doing for secondary light sources and methods?

I use a modified FBI technique with my handheld light when I am hunting for bad guys, even if my primary weapon light is working.

Using a Harries technique modified for rifles works well in my experience.

Use the light as one would for a normal Harries technique, you have the hand holding the light under the rifle forend with back pressure placed against the magazine or mag well.

tpd223,

Does that mod harries on the carbine mag work while shooting or just for searching until the shot is fired? Does the gun bounce off the light is what I’m asking?

What mod to the FBI technique do you apply for your searches?

could always do this:

I looked at that (magpul vid) as an option but then found a comparison thread of offset light holders here on the forum and saw how far those stick out, the extra weight and cost verses the $18.00 VTAC mount that puts the light in a better position.

If I was busting down doors instead of a hobbie shooter I would likely mount 2 lights, but having a spare handheld as a backup is good enough for me. It also gives me a way to light up stuff without pointing a gun at it.

Do you use that mount?

2 lights on the gun for me. There’s no chance that I’m going to grab my rifle and and extra flashlight in an emergency. I’ll realistically have my gun and whatever ammo is on/in it.

Interesting LaRue mount. I’d hate to actually become a LaRue customer!!!

When I am all jocked-up I have a light on my long gun, a light on my pistol and a light on my person, usually on a belt.

If I was actually engaged in a low-light fight and my carbine light shit the bed I would probably transition to my pistol with the mounted light. So in this case, I’bve made the decision to give up a superior threat-stopping machine for better low-light discrimination. This is all circumstantial, of course. How dark is it really? What is the nature of the threat?

I have used a hand-held with a long gun - I do it sort of like Harries with the light ending up outboard of the right side of my magwell.

I considered throwing flares, but I dont want to catch my house on fire.

If I have to grab a long gun in the middle of the night, it will be a shotgun in the house as the rest is in the safe out in the shed.

If its something like Katrina and guarding the house, then I figure there is time to select a carbine and put on the extra gear that goes with running it.

Can’t think of a time where I would only be able to grab a gun and mag without a support setup. Even a “go bag” with extra mags would not require any more effort to grab with the carbine.

That’s funny. What have you considered as a backup to your weapon light?

Katar,

That’s the optimal setup IMO.

The only time I would have a light on my handgun (if I owned one) would be in full kit, but I don’t have one because I don’t EDC a handgun with mounted light due to concealability.

When I was on patrol the laser/light mount was awesome but I decided against it when I quite LE because I didn’t want two handgun lighting methods to work with. One for full kit and one for EDC.

I use the Harries and Graham method with the pistol and they both transfer over to the carbine with the VDG nicely. One method(s) for both situations. Not as nice as a handgun/light combo, but simpler for muscle memory and I get more practice with it in IDPA and on my own since I shoot a lot more night stuff with pistol (indoor range without lights) than I can with the carbine at night.

The light switch.

All jokes aside, I do have a laser I never use that would be for low light. I hadn’t thought of mounting two lights on my gun. If I did though it would be a second surefire G2 LED due to weight concerns. Maybe in an elzetta mount.

Generally speaking I do not have a light mounted on my CCW, but I always have a hand held light. However, I have been known to carry concealed OWB with a weapon-mounted light.

Careful lumping the laser and the light into the same category - one is for engaging while the other is for locating and identifying.

Weight had some to do with my not mounting two lights also. The AK is at 9.0lbs already and front heavy because its an underfolder.

Even an extra 6-10oz is going to make a difference. I starting to shave oz off now, but don’t see a lot of room for savings.

Light switch is first choice in a building if you can find them. They are not working too well back East right now though.

Lately I’ve been wondering if I could pull this off. If I EDC’d a light mounted Glock 17 then I would switch protocol.

When weather is cool like now its not an issue but come Summer I doubt it can be done.

We get 105+ deg days here and a light shirt with t-shirt under or very light vest is about all I can manage on those days.

What OWB rig did you use?

BladeTech, I believe. I have also carried my M&P45 concealed OWB with a mounted light wearing an RCS Phantom holster, which I feel is more suited than the BladeTech to this role.

There was a user here who had a really interesting AR light mount that I would love to try. It’s barrel mounted - right up against the FSB and allows a 6 and 12 oclock light mount.

though I could accomplish that with any pica barrel mount. I tend to try to retain free float in my rifles by keep the barrels clutter free.

i carry a a handheld light as much as i do a weapons mounted for various reason’s

if using the pistol mounted light and i need to seach or check on partner, family or myself last thing i want to cover them or myself, or after while covering down the with weapons mounted lights i can scan the area for more threats while keeping the bad guy covered.

at a recent low/no light shoot on a jungle run my weapons light on my handgun became so fouled 1.5 mags from mp 9mm it was usless in the woods walk i had to move to my backup light

1-1/2 mags fouled your light? Those lead reloads or something?
