sealed goggles/eye pro question- rec needed

I will be taking a class in a few months dealing with vehicle counter-assault and stuff like that. Shooting from a closed vehicle, through glass, will be something new for me. The course requires sealed eye protection ala Oakley goggles or Wiley-X etc.

I’ve never used anything other than conventional eye protection. I am leaning towards the Wiley-X options because they seem very low profile and I ASSume their relative ubiquity means that they are decent kit. OTOH wtf do I know? Any ideas?

This will be in mid-May in SoCal, so figure hot or very hot conditions, and fairly dusty too. Also, I don’t need a kevlar dome, but I wonder if it might be a good idea to invest in something like a ProTec helmet…?

I used prescription Wiley X SG-1 Goggles for several years back when I needed glasses. They are low profile like sunglasses and even include a set of temple arms in addition to the strap if I recall properly. They are also pretty cheap depending where you go which is a plus.

Your biggest problem as I see it will be with any goggles is fogging. Physical exertion will inevitably lead to sweating and condensation on the lenses. However, I rubbed on cat crap (not what you think look it up) and that solved the problem for me some of the time. They also offered a model with cuts at the sides of the lens for additional ventilation but that may not be an option in your case.

Also, I had some Bolle T800 goggles. They are bulky and may be discontinued but they were the standard in “tactical” goggles. They had great ventilation.

Anyways, best of luck and good shooting. Hope this helps.

thanks. fogging is an issue in any clime, I guess.

Take a look at the ESS Profile NVG goggles - decent ventilation, fairly low profile (much lower than the old Bolle standard), good protection and decent price.

I’ve seen good results with Rudy Project Guardyan Tacticals with some Kat Krap on them.

There’s a forum sponsor here that produces what you are looking for and offers (I believe) 30% off of their products for M4c members. I can’t remember the company name, unfortunately. Their ad pops up every once in a while.

I’m very happy with ESS Advancer V12 goggles. You can adjust them in seconds (pull or push on lenses) to have either good ventilation or to have them fully sealed. I tried Wiley-X SG1 before and it was huge mistake for me - they get fogged all the time.

Check out Revision’s Desert Locust goggles. I have heard nothing but good stuff about them, and you can get some interesting variations, including a model with a fan.

I had the Wiley-X CQC before. I literally gave them away for free because of how much they fogged up, and how quickly. And that was with Cat Crap on them. And I’m not a real sweaty guy either, so beware.
