scope height?

im planing on mounting scope on ar. i have more bolt gun exp. than ar, where low is the way to go. however the few scopes ive seen mounted were on high rings. why so? im thinking of adding ggg b comp with burris like red dot for the close stuff. while cheek weld is different than bolt gun, i’m not uncomfortable with different cheek weld. are high mounts the norm? and why?

IMHO:

Cheekweld on AR platform(s) are closer/higher due to the design of the platform, buffer tube. Most bolt guns comb height/cheep weld is lower due to bolt clearance on rearward bolt action/cycle.

AR, height from top of rail/upper receiver to the stock is the difference of the clearance for the charging handle. Which is probably less than 1/3 of an inch from the top of the upper receiver.

Bolt guns usually use 30mm Low, .825", to Medium, .885-.925", ring heights with objectives from 36mm - 50mm. Reason, bolt guns have a Base Height+Plus Ring Height which equal to roughly 1.25-1.45+".

AR, If you use a riser such as the Badger Ordnance 22MOA, you would use Medium, .885-925", 30mm Rings. This is similar to a bolt gun setup. Main objective is not Objective clearance, but proper eyepiece height/picture with “your” face structure.

AR, If you use a One Piece Mount mount, you would use a 1.41-1.50" mount:

  • You can go with say the LaRue SPR-S LT-158 30mm 1.41" height QD mount, but only a few BUIS will clear the scopes eyepiece. This also depends on the Scope you use as well. I find the Leupold MK4 line has a fairly small eyepiece OD compared to other glass on the market if you plan on running a buis.

If you use the LaRue SPR LT-104 30mm 1.50" height QD mount you can use “most” low profile buis on the market, say Troy Ind’s battle sights. But, this again depends on the scope you plan to use.

Just like bolt guns if the combo is too high you’ll have that “chin” weld.

Im short on time, so apologize for the sloppy post. Hope this helps.

Here is a very useful chart with drill down descriptions and links for most one piece A/R mounts: http://www.maxicon.com/guns/optics/one_piece/ar15_onepiece_mounts.htm

I have the Burris which seems to be serviceable, if a bit klutzy. The next one will be LaRue or American Defense.

Here is my Schmidt & Bender 1.5 - 6x42 Scope using a Larue QD LT-104 mount.

Hope this helps:
