Have my first AR style carbine, a Rock River, 16" barrel with a 1:9 twist. Was pre-configured with the Dominator 2 iron sight with EOTech mount. I don’t want to spend the money for an EOTech now and I am not sure a red dot or holographic scope fits my needs, so I am here asking for some suggestions.
-
I am 60yo so I don’t have the best eyes
-
I hope not to have to use the gun defensively nor do I hunt so rapid acquisition isn’t a priority
-
Will primarily use the carbine for target shooting and plinking, perhaps the occasional gopher.
-
Expect to shoot between 50-300 yards
-
Have been looking at Mil-Dot style reticles, but not mandatory
-
Wondering if an illuminated sight would give me some of the functionality of a red dot but maybe easier to sight with than a red dot, or longer distance?
I found a link in this forum for a list on opticstalk that had scopes grouped by quality. The 4th and 5th groupings (from the bottom) yielded this list:
8th - Bushnell Elite 3200, Leupold VX-II, Millet Tactical/Buck Gold, Nikko Stirling, Nikon Buckmaster, Sightron SI & SII, Vortex Crossfire & Diamondback, Super Sniper Fixed
9th - Burris Fullfield II & Timberline, Leupold Rifleman & VX-I, Leatherwood, Mueller, Nikon ProStaff, Simmons
With just that list, I came up with 41 scopes to consider in the 2.5-10X50 up to a 4-16X56 scope, with most being a 3-9X40.
Since I will be losing my current iron sight when I remove the Dominator, I will want a low-profile flip sight for the rear. I already have a flip sight in front. Will also need a scope mount to go on the M4 style rail.
Please help me with a scope, mount, and rear sight recommendation.
Thanks!
