Armailite finally has the lower half available that I’ve been waiting two years for, so I’ll finally get one to go with the upper half that I’ve had for two years. Once I put it together, here’s what it will look like (sans scope).
I’d like to get a magnified scope, but I really don’t know anything about the scopes that are currently available. I’ll have about $1000 in to this rifle. I don’t want to spend another $1000 on the scope. I’m going to be shooting mostly 150gr FMJ. I want something that is good quality, but it doesn’t have to be the best latest thing out there. What are some good options?
good choice, I myself am putting together a AR-10. What are you planing on doing with this rifle?
I recommend a SWFA Super Sniper.
IOR Valdada for that price range is pretty good. It has pretty good reticle choices too.
Check out the Sightron SIIB or SIII series scopes…
I handled one of the new Redfields this week, it was very nice. Don’t be too cheap on glass though man, its important. Another option would be to buy a used $1200 scope for less.
I can also “2nd” the SuperSniper, I have one on my 700 5R. There is a bunch of compromise in the scope, but you’ll never beat it for the price. Its also built like a damn tank. I’m just nitpicky.

Another question that you want to ask is “what am I using the gun for?”.
Is this a hunting gun? Supersniper, et al will do you nicely. $350-$400 with a nice set of Badger rings, used, or about the same used with an LT104.
Or is it more for "foreign troops/nato/red dawn/cold-camp style, government-turned-the-military-against-the-people/all out SHTF nightmare rifle? TA33-R9 acog; tough as nails, no batteries or electronics, reliable as a hammer and quick/brainless-easy to use, and ranges for 308 out to 600 yards. Fixed 3-power though (a LOT of people are liking it so far, supposed to be a helluva multi-tasker).
Those are only 2 variables. When planning out your gun, you should probably spend at least as much time and money picking out your glass as you did the whole rifle, and ask yourself a LOT of questions about your personal needs and the future of that particular gun.
Or just become a gear-whore because you just had to try everything. Like me. Don’t do that. You go hungry a lot.
General use optic? Leupold VX3 1.75-6x.
I would also look for the Falcon Menace. Their tough to find but its a quality scope. The Super Sniper is a 10x fixed power while the Menace is a 4-14x with a First Focal Plane so no matter what power your zoom is your mil-dot are always accurate.
