For those of you who have a Scar please comment on whether it will function with as wide of variety of ammunition as an AK (Can you rapidly shoot steel cased ammunition without malfunctions ?).

It will feed just about anything that you put in it. I’ve fired a variety of factory ammo with no stoppages yet. However, I don’t shoot crap ammo such as wolf.
i’ve got about 2000 rounds through my 16S and have not had a stoppage or malfunction yet. i’ve shot wolf through it, but usually i shoot brass-cased ammo. mostly M855 or equivalent.
i’ve rapid fired steel cased wolf ammo through it, but it cycles noticeably slower, and sometimes i’ll ‘outrun’ the trigger; by pressing the trigger faster than it’ll cycle (double taps, 1-5 drills etc).
I’ve got 5,600rds of all steel cased through mine. Fires fine, ironically the only problem I have ever had was with ARC mags. No ammo related problems.
I was curious about the same thing. Bought mine, oiled it, shot 1900 rounds of every ammo type at USTC without cleaning it…felt bad and finally cleaned it. The only malfunction I had was when I switched the gas regulator to the “supressed” mode. It would still fire a few, then not cycle. But thats me messing around and a great way to practice transitions/ malfunction clearances.
2500 rounds, including Wolf and steel-cased Hornady, low-end brass ammo, low-powered ammo etc. - no malfunctions.
Mine eats any brass cased stuff on the, ‘suppressed’ setting (sans underpowered Radway Green). Eats Wolf on the, ‘high-gas setting’ (I call it the, ‘Wolf setting’) with minimal problems; I’ll agree with militarymoron about, ‘outrunning’ the trigger when using Wolf sometimes. Maybe 1:100 rounds or so. I’d have to check my logbook to know for sure but I’m ~5k rounds in.
Can’t wait to shorten this bad bear so the suppressor doesn’t weigh down the front end so much. I’m think 12"-12.5" or so.
I would imagine that the SCAR will tolerate the steel cased stuff better than the AR due to the slower unlock time.
DAVEPAL84- Brother, I would really go with the 10" barrel length if you SBR it. That is what I did, and it handles so well. The gas port diameters for the standard barrel lengths are known. With an odd length you’ll be reaming a little, cleaning the barrel, shooting to check for function…it will get very tedious. I actually just got my barrel back from Marvin Pitts last week and I am about to ream the gas port myself. I plan on using the test equipment I used in the SCAR vs AR thread to ream the port until I am as close to the standard ROF as possible.
Tom- It was great getting to meet you yesterday. Thanks for stopping by Range 2.
Based on your responses the scar seems to have ammunition insensitivity, which is a worthwhile trait. Have any of you tried to shoot it dry (without oil or grease) ? In addition have any of you tried to purchase spare parts?
Thanks again for the help.
I shot 300 rounds without lube - accidentally. I got some dirt in mine, cleaned it, got distracted and forgot to lube it. I didn’t have any issues, and didn’t notice any undue wear, but I wouldn’t do this on purpose.
I don’t like the ballistics of a 10" barrel. My 11.5" AR SBR handles just fine (and I admit that I compromised on that barrel length–when/if I wear that barrel out it’ll be replaced with a 12" or 12.5" barrel). I kinda view it the same way I do SBR AR-15’s: In my thinking, 10" is too much compromise on ballistics and 14.5" is too much compromise on length (and I don’t want to spit out $200 and waiting for a measly 1.5" either…)
I do understand that it will be a ‘ream a bit and clean and shoot and ream a bit’ etc etc but I have friends with the tools with ranges right outside their shops–pretty unconcerned about that process. It’ll take an afternoon at most.
My main reason for shortening is for running cans. God, do I hate a fullsize can hanging off of a 16" barrel. Seems like the only rifles I shoot suppressed are my SBR and my DMR(ish) build (since the precision build is shot off of a bipod most of the time anyway).
op- my scar16 has run 7200 rds with 2 cleanings ,first at 1000rds and 2nd just last week in a,moment of boredom,no jams ,double feeds no problems. i used it as my range [demo]gun during a 2 week contract training job with a LRS [ARNG]UNIT,that we were preping for an upcoming afghan deployment.ran close to 6000rds thru it at this time with only slip2000bolt oilings, lots of cqb, break contact, bounds, peels type drills over n over with the gun lent out for fam fire to numerous different skill level soldiers and NO problems at all.shot mostlym855,some 262 and some old 193 the supply guy found at the bottom of a crate.rifle is well used ,i have chopped it to 14.5 w pemed s\f brake and it still will group moa when called upon.fantastic battle carbine, fast handling, reliable ,light recoiling and most important high chick dig it factor:![]()
What Mags do you use?
Hey I know you…I bought my scar from you. I need to come up and get something else (Springfield milspec 1911) from you this week sometime. I’m the smiley one that comes up with Greg.
On to the topic. I don’t have as high of a round count as these guys, only 1000 or so rounds so far, but I have not had a single failure of any kind. It has become my favorite rifle and I will soon be shooting it a lot more.
no bananas- pmags though without modding the back of the mag to look like a GI mag you can;t slingshot the charging handle without inducing a big fu…jam!! i keep 10 dsg mags w magpul followers just for the scar around but if i ever get the dremel out[ok find it] i will mod some up and stick with pmags exclusively. hey mr. smiley good to see you here, anytime greg brought the miissus by the other day, i must say she is a visual DELIGHT, have no idea what she see’s in our good buddy, tony
I’ve put quite a bit of Wolf through mine. Nary an issue. My feeling is that a rifle meant for serious use is only as good as the worst ammo it will consistently handle.
I haven’t experienced that with my SCAR. I’ve been using exclusively revM windowed FDE PMAGs and I slingshot the CH fairly regularly.
I’ll see if I can induce a malfunction next time I take it out.
I have the same issue as SKINJA11 though it’s not a matter of a malfunction for me. With the PMAGs, the bolt simply won’t drop on a fresh mag using the charging handle. It will with the bolt catch though. I also have about a 50/50 chance that my PMAGs won’t drop free. Result? I only use TD ARC mags or USGI aluminum in my SCAR-L.
Stephen
My bolt will not drop on a fresh mag with the charging handle either. I have to release it with the bolt catch. PMAGs are also about 50/50 drop free for me too. If I pivot the gun in my strong hand while hitting the mag release they usually come out, but I may just switch back to USGI mags.
I have read that some will sand the inside of their mag well to make PMAGs drop free. I have not tried that yet, but I might.
